| Discuss everything about the Wangan Midnight PS3 game here.
Release Date: July 26th, 2007
To answer a few questions.
|Posted by: PACMAN Mar 9 2007, 12:56 AM|
| Hara, your the most dedicated WMT person I know on the planet, and also the fastest, I was just about to post the video myself today until I read the main page and noticed you beat me to it.
But I do have 2 photos I haven't seen on the website:
/\/\/\ I wish I was the guy in the red shirt, then me =
And do you have any information regarding the PSP version?
|Posted by: Hara Mar 9 2007, 01:05 AM|
| I'm sorry but you are confusing this game with Nanmco's Wangan Midnight. Namco only makes Wangan Midnight games for the arcade The PS3 game is being made by Genki, same goes for the PSP version.
There is little info on the PSP version. I believe that both games are made to be exactly alike. One ist just portable.
|Posted by: Sunzabuto Mar 9 2007, 05:41 AM|
| So the game is region free, so even though I cant read Japanese, I can play the game? AWSOME!!!
During the preview when it shows Tomoya raceing Blackbird was that Keiichiro in that silver supra?? And that was badass when it showed Akio,?????,and Tatsuya in a race at the end.(Was that Koichi Kijima driving the RX-7, becouse I though he drove an older FC, I think???)
p.s.- I wonder who made that music from the preview, and if that music was from the game.(Yuzo Koshiro perhaps....)
|Posted by: AsakuraZ Mar 9 2007, 09:04 AM|
| To answer the first question. Yes the silver Supra is being driven by Keiichiro. Its interesting to note that Tomoya and Tatsuya do race, two times in the series. It seems by the trailer that there going off the later chapters in the series right now.
Also I beileve the red GTR driver that is racing alongside the Blackbird, is Yamanaka, part of the tuning group RGO, that is owned by Kazuo Ota. This is mostly due to the fact that the race is almost identical to its manga counterpart, including the outcome of it.
And yes that is Koichi Kijima driving the white RX7(FC3S). The character your refering to that drives the yellow RX7(FD3S), is name is beyond me right now, but when I get home I'll edit this once I check my books.
|Posted by: Zanaduz Mar 9 2007, 09:27 AM|
| Isn't the driver of the yellow FD Masaki?
Earlier in the trailer, they have Masaki superimposed over a yellow FD, so therefore when the yellow FD shows up later on in the trailer, I assume it must be the same driver.
|Posted by: AsakuraZ Mar 9 2007, 10:46 AM|
|Correct! The driver is Masaki. I always forget his name. Yeah theres technically only two FD drivers in the series up to that point. Masaki, with his FD tuned by RGO and Oki, whos tuner is unknown. Since he drives on Hakone, its assumed he tuned his FD on his own.|

|That trailer looks nice, but I'd like to see this game on the Xbox 360. Why? Well, play Test Drive Unlimited, and you'll see the possibilities Namco has with taking WM onto Live...|
|Posted by: Hara Mar 22 2007, 11:54 PM|
| Well first off, Namco is not making the Wangan Midnight game for PS3. It is made by Genki. Test Drive Unlimited is a good game but it being on the 360 does not especially help because Xbox Live does not host the online service. Atari does.
PS3 does also offer online service. But not nearly as many members as Xbox Live. But will the game feature online racing? Shutokou Battle X or Import Tuner Challenge did not sell very well at all for the Xbox 360 so I'm not sure if Genki will try again to release another Highway racing game to the US/Europe. Especially when Wangan Midnight is not known to a large English audience.
I would still love to see the game come over to the Xbox 360. I would like to avoid buying the PS3.
|Posted by: Sunzabuto Mar 23 2007, 04:48 AM|
Same here, I do wish I wouldnt have to buy a PS3 to play it. And why is there not anyone on Import Tuner Challenge these days??? When I first had the game there was so many good racers online, but now I lucky if I get a match!
|Posted by: ferrarimanf355 Mar 23 2007, 08:54 AM|
Hey, even though Atari hosted the TDU servers, I thought that it was pretty good as to its implementation, especially with the instant challenges. If TDU can do it, then an online WM with a similar implementation would be awesome.
And why hasn't anyone licensed the manga in the US, anyways? Did the Tokyopop Intial D fiasco scare anybody away?
|Posted by: AsakuraZ Mar 23 2007, 10:13 AM|
| Well the main is reason is due to how popular the series is. Wangan Midnight is a great series, dont get me wrong, but its still not as popular overseas as say Initial D. Look at how long they have taken to start an anime series for it. It has been out as long as Initial D if not longer.
Hara makes an excellent point in mentioning the failure that Import Tuner Challenge had here in the states. If you look at the previous Shutokou Battle games released for the PS2 and Dreamcast they never really did that well.
Actually take a look at a majority of games made in Japan that do not come to the states. I'll cite some various Gundam titles. ACE and ACE2 are excellent titles that were on the PS2 and rivaled Zone of The Enders in term of gameplay and graphics. But Instead here in the states we get Journey To Jaburo and various Gundam Seed games. All pale in comparision to ACE. Its not that the ACE series is bad, its that usually if previous games do poorly, they rarely want to waste the time and money to try and localize newer games, even though they are better.
I for one hope that we do see a US release for WM regardless of the system. Hopefully with the small library of games the PS3 has, people will begin the notice it. But then again, have you seen any console Initial D titles make it over? The future is a bit uncertain. Time will only tell.
|Posted by: AssassinGT Apr 26 2007, 01:55 AM|
|Hey, first post lol but yeah I was wondering on how much of that Trailer is a rendering. I know the PS3 is capable of putting out those graphics in real time, the question is, can Genki do that? I've seen Gran Turismo HD on my 1080p 40" Plasma and I must say it is mindboggling. So I hope this games graphics can live up to the trailer as it is amazing as well. Anyone have screens of the ingames? From What I saw on the official site, they weren't any better if even worse than Import tuner Challenge (Shutoku Battle)'s graphics.|
|Posted by: Hara Apr 26 2007, 05:07 AM|
| To check screenshots. Check out the gallery, which is linked at the top.
They havent said so far if the game will be pushing 1080p. But I am pretty sure it will be up at 1080i.
|Posted by: Zanaduz Apr 26 2007, 07:16 AM|
|I'm still more worried about it just making it over the ocean to hit stateside; I don't care if it looks horrid, as long as it plays well.|
|Posted by: Hara Apr 26 2007, 10:37 AM|
|I still don't think the game has enough influence over here for them to want to bring it over.|
|Posted by: AssassinGT Apr 26 2007, 11:31 AM|
| All they have to do is call it Maximum Tune. I dunno about you guys but I live in Southern California and that Machine is everywhere. Every teenager has a maximum tune card ready to roll just like Initial D. Honestly, they should of just left it at the japanese name Wangan Midnight. When you change the name there will always be confusion.
Also about the screen shots, They only look maybe if slightly better than import tuner challenge. To be honest I think Tokyo Extreme Racer 3 for the PS2 was their best. It had almost 150 cars and the courses were extremely long. Vast amount of courses and even included all of the Wangan. The Wanderers styles were all different, the game had engine swaps and almost anything you can think.
I hope the PS3 Wangan Midnight can live up to, if not destroy that game.
|Posted by: Jon Michael Apr 26 2007, 12:06 PM|
| I'd like to see a game with the amount of cars Tokyo Xtreme Racer Zero had, but with the customization options and tracks a little higher than Tokyo Xtreme Racer 3. I thought the controls of 3 sucked in comparison to Zero also. I beat both games 100%, and they're both excellent games. Even if WM doesn't come out in the states, why don't people with a PS3 just import the Japanese game? You can play it without any mods or anything, only thing is European people won't be able to. But, Europe seems to get a LOT of games that never come out in America...
Import Tuner Challenge...I didn't get it because of the sad amount of cars it had. I don't care if the graphics are any better, I'll just pop in TXR0 and beat that again. Does anyone have a list of car that are going to be in WM for PS3?
|Posted by: AssassinGT Apr 26 2007, 02:51 PM|
Haha, I'm just a graphics Nut.. Hense why I have all that stupid equipment. Eitherway, the games car list is usually the selling spot. Releasing that early I don't think is gonna happen easily. Even so, if they were to add like just 5 cars to their current roster they would already rival Import Tuner Challenge.
Something I noticed though, Crave had a big part in the roll of all the Tokyo Extreme Racers. However I noticed that in Import Tuner challenge, crave was nowhere to be found? IT was just Ubisoft and Genki. Has crave dropped out of the Highway Racing Game scene.
|Posted by: Jon Michael Apr 26 2007, 03:31 PM|
| Crave had NOTHING to do with the game's creation. Crave was just the company that brought it over to America and worked on some of the translations. Kinda like how Quentin Tarantino pays to bring some Asian movies to America, but he didn't make them. Crave dropped out of that now and Ubisoft has taken their place as the company to pick it up and bring it to America. Hence the name change. If Crave would have still been he one bringing it to us there would be NO way it would have such a stupid name as Import Tuner Challenge.
I'd rather have 150+ DIFFERENT cars, rather than like 60 popular cars.
|Posted by: InsanezX2 Apr 26 2007, 04:07 PM|
| Since I hadn't seen it in the thread:
And a recent update:
|Posted by: AssassinGT Apr 26 2007, 04:50 PM|
Hmm thats good to hear about crave then. I agree with you on the 150+ Different car issue.
InsanezX2 Lol i saw those but thanks, can anyone translate the second page a little? Having trouble reading the Kanji and I don't understand why those girls are there? ... lol?
|Posted by: InsanezX2 May 31 2007, 06:21 AM|
| The full game site just launched.
|Posted by: Sunzabuto Jun 1 2007, 06:46 AM|
|Whats this I see on the site about actual cards? Is it going to incorporate some sort of cards scanning?|
|Posted by: tofu_boy86 Jun 1 2007, 07:01 AM|
|i think the card sistem is just a way of leveing up in the ranks. As for the battle system i kinda notice their using the same system of battling ao in the Kaido Series|
|Posted by: Sunzabuto Jun 1 2007, 08:01 AM|
How do you mean? When I saw the cards I though of a completly diffrent system. Maybe you go out and buy the cards at Wal-Mart or your local game store, take them home, scan them with some sort of usb scanning device, and thats how you progress through the game. Each pack will have a few random cards in it, some cards might give you info on other characters, some might unlock races, some might give you parts or upgrades, others might give you new paint jobs and other visual things. I still don't know how I really feel about it if thats the system they have worked out for the game. Pros: A setup for a very indepth game and community, maybe a door opener for a whole new type of console gameplay. Cons: GOD DAMN WILL IT BE AN EXPENSIVE GAME TO PLAY!!! Trying to collect all the cards for every car, character, and race will cost alot more than the game itself, I'll pretty much have to choose between playing that or the arcade version! But, I'm just spittin out ideas here, I'm probably really off to... Those pictures could have just been a preview of a new, Yugio style, Wangan card game...(wondering the possibilites...)
|Posted by: AsakuraZ Jun 1 2007, 10:18 AM|
| Well first you should be worried about the fact that this game is even going to be released stateside.
Secondly, I've looked at the site and Im a bit confused as well on the card system. What your saying is a bit farfetched, since there hasnt been any announcement for a USB card scanner device for the PS3. The only thing I can deduce is that it will include cards in the game ala PSP's version of Initial D.
If they WERE to do something you were suggesting, I would think they just would have a code on the cards to enter one time.
Again, this is all speculation, and your idea is really a bit out there.
|Posted by: tofu_boy86 Jun 1 2007, 02:06 PM|
|i think the card system is in the game it self what do you think its logical to say because thiers no USB card scaner for the PS3 so the cards are in the game|
|Posted by: Zanaduz Jun 1 2007, 04:10 PM|
|I also believe that the cards are supposed to be ingame. Whether this means it will play like that PSP MGS game (I forget the title of it ATM, but I'll remember it soon enough I guess), I don't know, and I hope not.|
|Posted by: tofu_boy86 Jun 1 2007, 08:35 PM|
|yeah because it will be a drag if we have to sepend good money on some freking cards. But none a less i will play it|
|Posted by: Sunzabuto Jun 4 2007, 07:26 PM|
Oh yah, my idea is really out there. I was just putting it out there because it was just a cool idea I had, I don't really expect the game to be anything like that. Your guess is as good as mine about what those cards really do.
|Posted by: tofu_boy86 Jun 5 2007, 08:12 AM|
|Well you just have to Wait and see what happens Man|
|Posted by: Hara Jun 7 2007, 08:19 AM|
|More pictures added to the Gallery including gameplay pictures of the game.|
|Posted by: Dflowen Jun 11 2007, 07:01 PM|
|I want to buy the game for the PS3 and PSP. I have the systems now I need the money for the games... so expensive.|
|Posted by: BCNR33GTR_boi Jun 12 2007, 09:38 AM|
| OOER PSP WM!!! awesome news, i've got ID on psp and its a great game and all however due to a different format i've definitley not got to post the times as i've done on the arcade however its fun to be playing it while not being at the arcarde and its a hell of a lot cheaper . The most annoying thing about ID is having to win your way to the parts cards so u can mod the car. If you choose the wrong one then u just have to keep racing till u get the part cards..... painful but does give the game length, not to mention net racing with other people.
what i think WM is going to do is be able to save the games onto a memorystick and be interchangable in the same way that you save your cars at the arcade on the magnetic cards. so you can play it on psp and when u have a kick ass car then take it to ur friends/relative/watever's house and kick their azz with ur psp version car........ just a thought..... best thing about WM is they have MY car in it WOOTS
|Posted by: dubc35 Jun 15 2007, 05:38 PM|
| Any word on if this game will support any wheels (logitech dfp for example)? I see the game comes out next month on play-asia.com for $65 USD
|Posted by: tofu_boy86 Jun 15 2007, 09:02 PM|
|i dont care what the hell it supports al i know is i geting the damn game|
|Posted by: dubc35 Jun 16 2007, 09:17 PM|
|Not supporting the dfp is not a deal breaker for me. I'll probably buy it anyway; just wondering if there have been any announcements.|
|Posted by: EMAGDNIM Jun 16 2007, 09:48 PM|
| I've already pre ordered my copy a little while ago. A few of my friends are doing the same. Yes Asia has it for pre order on the cheap...
I ordered mine from play asia since yes asia is a little slow to get stuff out. But if you don't want to pay the extra $$$ its a great deal.
Anyways I can't wait for it to be released.
|Posted by: EMAGDNIM Jun 20 2007, 06:33 AM|
|Any new info posted on the game?|
|Posted by: Alice_Z Jun 20 2007, 01:18 PM|
| I got a notice today from Yesasia that the price for Wangan Midnight PS3 went up to $55.99 due to an error on the manufacturer's part.
Anyone else get this?
|Posted by: tofu_boy86 Jun 20 2007, 02:20 PM|

NICE GRAPHICS THOUGH
I know that the arcade version will be SICK!!

|Theirs Going to be an arcade version of this game ????|
|Posted by: InsanezX2 Jun 28 2007, 11:30 AM|
As far as I'm aware, no. He's probably talking about Maximum Tune 3 from Namco. The PS3 game by Genki is an entirely different game.
|Posted by: tofu_boy86 Jun 28 2007, 12:01 PM|
oh ok Thanxz for clearing that up
|Posted by: Zanaduz Jun 29 2007, 07:08 AM|
| The PS3 game "Wangan Midnight" is NOT the same as the arcade machine "Wangan Midnight: Maximum Tune 3" that will be released later this year.
"Wangan Midnight", the PS3 game, is home release ONLY. This game utilizes an unlockable internal "card" system for tuning; the story arc focuses mostly on the Devil Z (you are playing as Asakura Akio).
"Wangan Midnight: Maximum Tune 3", the arcade game, is currently going to be released only to arcades (whether they decide to port it to a console is debatable). As those who have played the previous iterations of the WMMT arcade machines know, the game uses magnetic cards to record player data; the story arc is about a new character who comes in and races on the Wangan line, becoming famous like the Devil Z and Blackbird.
As you can see, the WMMT3 and Wangan Midnight (PS3) game are only related by the source material, treating it in different ways. The PS3 game plays through the eyes of Akio, while the arcade WMMT3 "creates" a new character/car (like how all of the Initial D: Arcade Stages handle it).

| One of the many joys of living in Japan, I will pick up my copy tomorrow. I just played a Demo of it and it looks pretty good, but the handling seemed a little funny.
|Posted by: EMAGDNIM Jul 24 2007, 07:20 PM|
Same...I should get it for thrusday but I'm hoping to get it tomorrow (Common FedEX)
|Posted by: wangan_sti Jul 25 2007, 02:49 AM|
|Is there a sub for the game|
|Posted by: gizmo Jul 25 2007, 07:07 AM|
I dont think so, well not on the demo and I would be surprised if they added subs.
|Posted by: cjbsfairladyz Jul 25 2007, 03:21 PM|
|how did you play the demo? i wonder if the demo is on the Japanese PS Store.|
|Posted by: gizmo Jul 25 2007, 07:16 PM|

|Posted by: ferrarimanf355 Jul 25 2007, 08:35 PM|

|Posted by: gizmo Jul 25 2007, 09:38 PM|
|Ok so The Card System you win cards at the end of each series of lvls then help the performance of your car. The lvls are damm hard if you dont use the cards|

Also, has anyone had a chance to try out the online mode yet?
|Posted by: gizmo Jul 26 2007, 06:35 AM|
| Emagnim please let me know what u think
|Posted by: the unknown Jul 26 2007, 10:09 AM|
anybody knows when it will come out in english?
|Posted by: EMAGDNIM Jul 26 2007, 03:02 PM|
| Okay...some quick thoughts...
-Some might not like the controls. It's classic TXR type stuff.
-The card system in this game makes the Wangan world go round. You gain them from the story mode and can use them for online battles.
-It's somewhat challenging. I've had to do quite a few missions over and over again. The cpu boost is somewhat crazy.
The story mode is interesting and follows the manga using cut scenes. JPN text though
Menus are in English
And I'm freakin stuck on chapter 5...that's all for now...
|Posted by: tofu_boy86 Jul 26 2007, 03:27 PM|

Turning and on the tighter roads, turning is very hard if not impossible.

is it really that hard to courner
|Posted by: EMAGDNIM Jul 26 2007, 09:13 PM|
No not at all...
I do need to figure out the card system though...
|Posted by: gizmo Jul 27 2007, 12:20 AM|
Maybe its just me then, or the fact this is the first Genki driving game i have played. The card system is kind of crazy i have been just picking at random and seeing what the effects are.
|Posted by: EMAGDNIM Jul 28 2007, 05:23 AM|
|No its not just you...I have run into a jam in the story mode...And now I have to site down and figure out what certain cards I need to use, because the cpu is just blowing me away!...It's starting to get on my nerves...|
|Posted by: wangan_sti Jul 28 2007, 08:15 AM|
|man it must be hard to understand the game. Is it blue ray disc. And can u copy the disc.|

I think cant Copy the disc its Blue ray for good sakes
|Posted by: gizmo Jul 28 2007, 03:17 PM|
| I am up to stage 10 at the moment on the Z levels, i just have four random cards, 2 green, ! orange and 1 red. If i lose i just re-pick some new cards. The supra was really slow for me but i still won with a B score.
Its still a fun game. I am going away for 4 days so i will play some more when i get back
I was thinking the Green was handling, Red was speed, no idea about orange. No idea if i am right thou
|Posted by: tofu_boy86 Jul 28 2007, 03:39 PM|
that must be the level up Card system they where talking about
|Posted by: gizmo Jul 28 2007, 03:49 PM|

| Anyone having trouble with cards in Ps3 Wangan
"im up to chapter 10 and i had trouble myself i had to keep retrying over and over but i have found a solution that is if you want to follow what i do...
i only had like 4 cards at that time lol but the better the result at the end the more cards you get like you need a gold medal as a reslutt but the cards thats have EG then a number next to it is a engine upgrade just stick one on and you will see the difference in power where it says PS after you get out of card selection.
Now im using R2 for accel and it helps ALOT when you use it you can keep your speed and not blow your engine for example:
your over 300km/h and your about or are on the orange zone for your engine blow with R2 just slightly let go until the speed stays at one spot thats means no more engine blow and no more loosing speed and especialy when there are turns your engine meter will greatly drop down to blue and if you know there are alot of turns dont be afraid to hold the accel all the way. You can also bump the cars into a wall and traffic or dont let them pass.
Hope i helped." Gleaned from http://www.gamespot.com/ps3/driving/wanganmidnight/show_msgs.php?topic_id=m-1-37096511&pid=935676

|The more I play this game the better it gets, its such a cool game, not the best but still a good game. If you cant red japanese its ok, there is enough english in the game for you to know what is going on. GOO BUY IT|
|Posted by: Zelse Aug 11 2007, 06:17 AM|
| Defiantly a great game. The only disappointment is the fact that the cars still handle like all the Tokyo Xtreme Racer series.. But other then that..A great game. I love the card system (even though I have no idea wtf it's saying on the cards...) and I love just the story system, the driving, how it looks, everything. If you can look past how the cars handle, then defiantly import this sucker.
I'm stuck on stage 10 too, so I think I'll work on blackbird or others to get more cards. Thanks for the tip.
|Posted by: balita Aug 12 2007, 10:13 AM|
| got some questions for you owners !
- would someone care to make a list of the cars that can be bought in the game ?
- is there some kind of quest mode ala shutokou battle in which players can choose the cars they want and freely tune them up, adding performance parts and stuff ? I mean, story mode is cool, but not being able to be "myself" in this kind of game would be a bummer !

|i hope you're kidding ? ps2 xbox and gamecube have been released for something like 6 year now and the emulators are still pretty lame. So just figure out how much time you will have to wait to have a decent ps3 emulator who can launch game with a normal speed and without graphical bugs...|

|To play ps2 games nicely on PC you need a really good computer. It's really not worth it. Cheaper just to buy a ps2 lol. Also the emulators are really buggy:P|
|Posted by: DOHC Aug 21 2007, 11:53 AM|

| i just played it...
got stuck on the stage with the blackbird and the R32 where i should do a 4"10"000, so any tips???
the only thing i got to complain about is the engine heat...
other than that, its all pretty good
|Posted by: gizmo Aug 22 2007, 06:11 AM|
To be honest I didn't have that many problems, playing the Z lvls, the best hint so far i think is using R2 to accelerate , helps so much when your engine wants to blow all the time. And do some Blackbird missions as well is u get stuck on the Z lvls, you get some nice cards to use
|Posted by: LegendaryFC Aug 22 2007, 11:15 AM|
| thanx gizmo
my copy should be arriving soon and that list will realy help.
|Posted by: the unknown Aug 22 2007, 10:52 PM|
thanks for the tips...
though i got to wait 4 months now cause the ps3 isnt mine .
anyway, if u didnt get it yet, what are you waiting for? go get it...
BTW: isnt the R2 button the handbrake, or am i wrong?
|Posted by: gizmo Aug 23 2007, 06:14 AM|
You are right it is but you can change it
|Posted by: LegendaryFC Aug 23 2007, 07:51 AM|
|Yh i prefer the r2 accel and l2 brake configuration. its more natural feel pressing the triggers.|

|YH! my copy arrivied this morning cant wait to play it looks great.|
|Posted by: Grunswald Aug 26 2007, 08:32 AM|
|i finally got mine. The game is really ugly but it's fun to play... The card list on the previous page is the only thing needed to play the game if you don't speak japanese. The first thing to do is to switch the accelerator from X to R2 or L2. Without that the game is really unplayable.|

|Posted by: Project BCNR33 Aug 27 2007, 08:51 AM|
|This game is really cool. I have to hold L2 every time on this game cause it is so dark.lol I like that if u push ur car too hard, the engine will blow out. I thank Genki very much for this game.|

| Sounds like you guys really like the game. This is a contrast from what other people have said about the game being terrible.
What about the online portion? I heard that it is very laggy in all respects, including the meters so that you never know when your engine is going to blow.
Just curious is all .
|Posted by: cjb Sep 4 2007, 05:44 PM|
|is this game 2 players? I just ordered it from play-asia but it doesn't say if it is or not.|
|Posted by: gizmo Sep 4 2007, 06:40 PM|
One player only
|Posted by: AssassinGT Sep 5 2007, 01:14 AM|
|lol i'm a big fan of genki racing games, this game has massive graphic potential.. but still to me, card system and blowing engine meter? That just flat out killed the game for me, I'll keep the game I guess cause I like this series, but honestly, i'll just stick to Import tuner Challenge (Tokyo Extreme Racer) for 360.. Even though theyre both done by the same people, the old one is more hand on real racing approach. You can even buy the Devil Z at the end of the game|
|Posted by: cjb Sep 8 2007, 11:16 PM|
|okay so i've cleared every chapter so far but akio's section. i'm stuck at chapter 5, at the part after the 4:20:000 time attack where your engine is going to blow before it starts. without more cards to get its hard as hell.|

|Posted by: Fredrick2003 Sep 15 2007, 09:15 AM|
| Well the consensus is that it still can't touch the arcade version by a long shot, even with the online play.
I will save my $700 (I figure thats what a decent model of the PS3 costs with tax) and put that into my engine overhauls :3.
|Posted by: MaximumNinja Sep 15 2007, 09:36 AM|

| no one answered my questions last time so I'm going to formulate them again
1. Is there some kind of career mode in the game ? Is it someting ala shutokou battle, in which you're given an initial amount of money to buy your first car with, before racing shuto hashiriyas ?
2. How are garages and car purchases handled in the game ? Can you just buy anything you want among the available cars and tune it up, or are their other conditions to meet beforehand ?
3. Related to question n.2, what cars can be bought in the game ?
thanks in advance
|Posted by: gizmo Sep 27 2007, 10:36 PM|
| ok answers.
you dont buy you are given, good results get you nice cars and cards (proformace parts) read more about the Card System in this game.
Its different from how you are thinking completely. still a good game, but it pissed me off a bit and i am not playing it at the moment.
|Posted by: balita Sep 28 2007, 01:51 AM|
| thank you for answering man !
I've read about the car system here and there, but actually thought money was still involved during a player's progression. Guess I was too much looking for a shuto-like ! Won't prevent me from buying the game in a soon future though.
forgot to ask couple things about online play
Is it limited to one on one, no traffic races ?
|Posted by: Eurotrash Oct 24 2007, 08:54 PM|
| I arrived in Japan on Sunday, so I decided on Tuesday to go pick this game up while I was here.
The card list is going to help, I'm sure. Thank you to whoever provided it. However, I would like to read the story and I was wondering if there was a script in english on the internet, of if there was a patch I could download to play the entire game in english.
Also, what is the limit of car customization on this game? All I have seen so far is Bonnet, Muffler, and Spoiler. Is there a wider range of customization as there was in the arcade game?
Thanks guys, hope to hear from you soon.
|Posted by: Mystireo Jan 20 2008, 11:12 PM|
| Hey, I read somewhere that only the 60GB PS3 would be able to play this.
Is that true?
Because I'm picking up a 80GB tomorrow or in the next couple of days and I really want to get this as one of my first games.

| Received this game on saturday and it`s really fun.
Made good progress in the game but now I got a question that couldn`t be solved despite a japanese FAQ and a chinese and english part list.
My question is how do engine swaps work?
I got the card "077: VG30 Engine Level 1" but how do I install this engine?
Anyone managed to find a solution?
Thanks in advance!
|Posted by: suv_drift Jan 21 2008, 08:02 AM|
| I have a 80GB and it works fine..... seems that any PS3 works with it.
But for the Engine level cards..... that is unknown to me, any help should be appreciated.
|Posted by: Mystireo Jan 21 2008, 11:54 PM|
|Thank you for clearing that up!|
|Posted by: animalica Jan 24 2008, 11:49 AM|
| For my home use I compiled a japanese FAQ with a chinese card list and a english brief card list from the GameFAQ`s boards.
So I can easily tick off what events and cards I won and what cards maybe useful for the next races.
This are the genuine FAQ`s
For translating the japanese and chinese files I used this page:
And now here`s my destilled version:
Without the whole card list at the end it`s 17 pages, complete I would guess up to 20 pages.
The brief card list which describes in the cards in general are on top and are colored to match the colors of the cards in the game for convenience.
If you got no color printer, select them all and change the color to black otherwise some lines are too faded out to read.
|Posted by: suv_drift Jan 24 2008, 06:20 PM|
Now it's more cleaner...
I need to read it first... to see if you can equip the tuner cards (70-80 I believe...) to the cars.
|Posted by: animalica Jan 25 2008, 05:11 PM|
Unfortunately GameFAQ`s purges their boards at the end of the year so me and other people who got this game this year are too late to the party.
And I already tried to look it up in the http://www.archive.org/web/web.php (Internet Archive) but it`s too early to show up there.
So I hope no one suffers from Alzheimer's disease and will post how to do engine swaps.
Would be very kind.

| Anyone playing this with the G25? It's pretty cool, you can feel when you run over the expansion joints and as you go faster it gets harder to turn the wheel with the g-force. It's great for throttle control too, you can really fine tune your movements with it.
Oh and thanks animalica for the translated faq's, it's coming in really handy!

|Posted by: suv_drift May 16 2008, 09:21 AM|
|the main menu is actually in English, the Card system is in Japanese. The game itself have a little manual that explains all the essentials in English. Sooooo... there shouldn't be any problems.|

..... doubt it.
You can see them, but as far as I played the game, I didn't race them in story mode. Challenge mode, in the advance level (99 cars to race) may be appear. But so far I got 50 runners 'til BlackBird (level 5) smoke me, running near 395-400 km/h.

| hi everyone
2 weeks ago I ordered the game from hong kong and it cost me $46 including shipping. Today I received it this morning and im telling you this game is simply magnificent. I liked most the graphics and the story mode looks great (its only in japanese but somehow I managed to understand something from it). Im wondering how can I change the car colours and get more upgrades. Also im still new to this game until I get used to it. If you guys interested to buy this game ebay got plenty of it and yes there are many used games but I dont care at all. All
I care the disc doesnt got any scrathes or any damage on it and thats fine with me. I also found the initial d game for ps3 and looks fantastic. Still a bit more expensive at the moment but I wish someday get 1.
thx for reading

|Do people still play this game online?|
|Posted by: GetMePower Jul 29 2008, 12:21 AM|
| I played some guys from Japan, but they only somehow play the game on the weekends, Friday in the US, Saturday in Japan. The Japan players played the game on that kind of day in the afternoon. I have the game and got platinum in all scenarios. Every card is unlocked except card #102 and card #105. I like the game, but the handling is funny.
I'll give you tips about the game,
1. Please make sure you're playing with the game pad on scenario mode and keep it wired to prevent delays.
2. Set the gas function to R2 and set the brake function to L2, just to prevent your car from overheating.
3. If you can't get them all platinum, try doing different scenarios and drive as fast as possible.
4. Engine swaps are acquired after 15 platinums or more are done.
5. If you're going to play Survival mode in the monster class, you'll need different cards in one set. You'll need a RB26 or a 2JZ Lvl2 engine swap card, card #065 (Transmission and Suspension), card #043 (Weight Reduction), card #068 (Body Stiffness, Engine Durability and Life Gauge), card #054 (Tire Grip), card #010 (Engine Upgrade for the RB26 and the 2JZ), card #047 (ECU High Torque) and card #067 (Ghost Car Mode).
6. If you want to use a steering wheel, set the rotation to 200 degrees. 900 degrees makes it worst. The best steering wheel to use is the G25.
That's all you need from me.

Thanks very much for your tips GetMePower! I had a savegame with more than 15 Platinum medals, but that one is gone Now I'm struggling to get EVEN ONE Platinum Medal. I guess I'm using the wrong cards, or should I disconnect the Wheel and use the Sixaxis-Controller therefor?
Do you have tips regarding Cards in Story-Mode? Any help would be appreciated
ATM I'm using following cards:
004 - Engine upgrade for Blackbird and Devil-Z
043 - Weight Reduction Card
049 - ECU Card for High Power Output
054 - Tire Grip improvement
|Posted by: GetMePower Aug 22 2008, 08:24 PM|
| You're very welcome, Desune. Make sure you have the weight reduction card, the highest engine tune card, the suspension card and the transmission card on the four slots. If it doesn't help, try to figure it out. Use the controller, not the wheel. Using the wheel will make your rank below S at some point. To get the S rank, please check out here, http://www37.atwiki.jp/wangan3/ and you'll see Story Mode on the left side. Click one of the links from the Story Mode section. This will show you the time and the S rank.
I updated the Wangan Midnight PS3 English wiki under the username "APR76". Speed King is added in the car list.

anyway does anyone know where i can find a mini guide to the meanings of the cards? kinda having a lil trouble.

animalica posted a guide on this topic on page 5 (last post).
|Posted by: Desune Aug 27 2008, 04:39 PM|
In the meantime I managed to get Platinum on some Stages, but thanks anyway.
I just replaced 054 (Tire Grip) with 055 (Transmission upgrade) and with that card I won Gold on Tatsuya Series #5. In this series i did get 056 (Transmission 2). With that configuration i was able to get some Platinum Medals
And yes, I unplugged the Wheel as well and put acceleration to R2 and brakes on L2 ^^
You see, I just did what you wrote now. You should've answered earlier.
Thanks as well for your work on wikipedia.org - looks nice!

|i posted this in the game section but i guess i should put it here. im so confused on cards 126-128. the translation makes no sense. how do you get those?ive only been playing story mode but im getting to the point where i could really use more than 4 cards. so um.. how do you get the extra slots open?|
|Posted by: Desune Sep 10 2008, 09:19 AM|
| Hi majik16106
To get the extra slots open, you have to earn Platinum medals (Rank S in the majority of races in a serie of story mode)
If you get 5 Platinum medals overall you will receive card #126 that unlocks a 5th card slot.
15 Platinum medals are needed for card #127
#127 will give you a 6th slot and the ability to use the "engine swap" cards (#69-#80)
25 Platinum medals are needed for card #128
#128 gives you the 7th and 8th slot and the ability to use 2 "tuner cards" (the green ones?) simultaneously
|Posted by: Nomake Wan Sep 14 2008, 05:42 PM|
Tuner cards are the red cards.

i was just wondering if it lets you do aero stuff? i could wait and see but wheres the fun in that.
and not to get off topic but is the gameplay in the ps2 one similair or is it totally different, as far as the modes, and the cards...i tried to time it so i could play that one first but not looking like its working out that way oh well
|Posted by: Nomake Wan Sep 16 2008, 09:02 PM|
| The PS2 game sucks. Be very glad that the PS3 game plays completely differently. Seriously, what were you thinking buying the PS2 game. I hope you got it for cheap, 'cause I just can't say it enough... it SUCKS.
You can add spoilers, change mufflers, and put on carbon fibre hoods in the PS3 game. That's the limit to customization. If you're looking for a particular aero kit, you'll have to hope that one of the manga characters uses it.

| from wat i've heard from other friends...the ps3 game is very diff to the arcade..
is this correct? and is it worth getting? (u may have already talked bout it..but i sorta cbf trying to go thru it all haha)
|Posted by: Nomake Wan Sep 16 2008, 11:18 PM|
It is very different, because they're made by completely different companies. Bandai Namco makes Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune. Genki makes Wangan Midnight (PS3). Notice that they are two completely different companies, and the PS3 game is not called "Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune" because it is, in fact, a completely different game.
I prefer the PS3 game to the arcade. Way more realistic, and holy shit 1080p is so sexy I could die.
|Posted by: Roflmao Sep 17 2008, 04:59 AM|
ohh fair enoughh
1080hp...it was already unrealistic enough...its just gets worse lol
yeh i might get it when i get my ps3 next yr lol..
|Posted by: Nomake Wan Sep 17 2008, 12:44 PM|
You idiot. 1080p. It's a high-definition resolution. Google it sometime.
|Posted by: rx-666 Sep 17 2008, 05:01 PM|
| im so glad ps3 has an hdmi output. on of the many reasons the 360 is inferior, well im too cheap to buy or find their cable. i know one comes with the elite. if i wanted to pay for an elite, i would have just bought a ps3 back then.
i cant wait...and i paid like 10 bucks more for the ps2 version hahaha live and learn. but i read it was made off the txr0 engine so by that logic it should be semi decent...i hoped
|Posted by: Roflmao Sep 17 2008, 05:31 PM|
oh whooopz misread that my bad lol..
i have a 1080 HD at home...but i dont have a ps3 -.-...i really want one lol..
|Posted by: Driftsucky Sep 17 2008, 08:05 PM|
|Wangan Midnight for the PS3 is just like TXR0 for PS2. Maximum Tune is...well...Initial D for all intensive purposes. That's the run down. And, 1080p is SO great.|
|Posted by: rx-666 Sep 18 2008, 05:17 PM|
| fyi i work for dish and 1080p tv isnt that far away either they already have ppv and on demand 1080p movies, just nothing ive wanted to watch yet. 1080i in the true hd shows is pretty decent as it is.
i doubt its just like it, but i know its similiar. thats why i bought a ps3.
|Posted by: DOHC Sep 21 2008, 06:39 PM|
|do you really high super waper detail of a guys face lol?arcade is just as good|
|Posted by: Nomake Wan Sep 22 2008, 12:20 AM|
You have no idea what the hell you're talking about. Play the game before making such a foolish statement.
|Posted by: rx-666 Sep 24 2008, 04:30 PM|
| of course it showed up at the beginning of the work week. i managed ton get thru almost all of the z stages. only got one gold but im just flying thru to play the game. its pretty fun, i dont have a problem with the steering like some people, probably because im so used to genki games.
i do see why some people would like a port from the arcade or at least similair mode, that would make this game like twice as good.
|Posted by: rx-666 Sep 29 2008, 06:33 PM|
| yea so the ps2 version is on the cd format, no one ever mentioned that. i cant even get it to play so that alone does make it suck. tried adjusting the laser and everything no dice. i do have an og release ps2 so i would think it would be able to work. best 50 bucks i ever spent. i am using boot discs for all my import games, maybe for some reason its the fact its an import and on cd format?
but i did highly enjoy the ps3 one for sure. im still going back to get better ranks but i finished it the other day. good game.

|Posted by: suv_drift Oct 6 2008, 04:16 PM|
ditto, but I doubt there is a connection between psp and ps3

|Posted by: GetMePower Nov 7 2008, 10:46 PM|
|I've clocked 411KMH on the A80 with the RB26DETT swap. I've tried doing 420KMH, but it won't clock. I don't think anybody done more than 411KMH in Wangan Midnight... yet.|

|Was it like playing the midnight R version on the arcade?|
|Posted by: Grievermode2 Aug 14 2010, 01:56 AM|
| hey everyone ! i'm Grievermode2 just joinned nice to make your aquintance ! i've been playing since last year and almost stopped cause it look's like im alone playing in wangan, then i've stumbled upon this site and man am i glad to find this site... i will be looking forward to meet you guys on wangan since it's weekend let's all go to wangan tonight okay guys... my id is: Grievermode2
it would be great if you guys would invite me
bye !!! keep pushing those throotle to the max !!!
oh i'll try to go online allnight tonight started at 00.00 local time, ok i'll see you guys there
question: how's the connection really ? my connection isn't that good (but as an example : i can play gta 4 online, but can't play soul calibur 4 online)
because im taking the cheapest package for my internet connection then again cause im just a regular univercity student
|Posted by: Grievermode2 Aug 15 2010, 03:38 AM|
i don't really know about 3 types of handling, but for the D/A Set Up is for throttle response.
you see by setting it on the throtle will response differently according how much pressure u use un the throotle( in my case i use the R2 trigger button on the controller as my throotle button) just like in real life cars or so that's the idea
however if set to off then it won't matter how hard u push the throotle, it will revs the engine to it max output.
i would advise to set the D/A Set Up to ON though cause it gives a lot more feel on the cars characteristic

| to any wangan midnight(ps3) racer ;
let's go online and race, let's put our name on the leader board
since the record was made around 2007 by local(japanese) racers, why not we update the record and put our name this time !
i've been trying to find some but never find any race,so i don't know wheter there were any other racer so it's kinda hard to proggress if u can't have battle's
so let's liven up the server and raced at wangan again , it's kind of sad to think that this game going to be forgotten cause there's new and better race game out there now
come on guys i personally don't want to left this game, i loved wangan midnight and this game, that's why i still playing

| Hello everyone! My name is Eric and I am new to the site and game. However I am very familiar with this anime.
I just got my copy in today tried it out for a minute and am flabergasted at how difficult understanding the game is. Sure the menus are in english but everything else is pretty difficult if you don't know the lingo.
Thanks in advance!
Edit: I found the translation guide from a member on here.
I have no chance vs. Blackbid in akios Z31. Do I need to instal cards or something like that?
|Posted by: suv_drift Dec 31 2010, 05:16 PM|
| since my older PS3 broke, I didn't have the chance to play it again (I have to start all over again)
Let's see if I can do the runs again, and play online also....

| Hello All! New poster here...
I just got the game after only finding out they made this game 2 months ago!!! Just got it over the holiday, playing 1st time right now. I hate being late to the party (as I was/am from Initial D Extreme Stage)....
In any case...you guys are a lot of help in the translations...but one thing that is bothering/irking me is what the hell "Handling Assign" means?!?!?! 3 types, apparently the 3rd type has the same writing in both catagories...
Has no one/anyone figure out what handling assign means? I'm betting it helps with the handling of the cars and maybe making the game better/easier...
|Posted by: Grievermode2 Jan 7 2011, 10:16 PM|
|good to know there are still wangan racer's out there|
|Posted by: GT3 RS Jan 8 2011, 02:05 AM|

|Posted by: WRX22B1998 Jul 1 2011, 07:41 PM|
no arguments there
|Posted by: GT3 RS Jul 1 2011, 07:58 PM|
| Id give this game an 8/10.
Online sucks. Doppler effect sucks. Physics...meh. Graphics were incredible.
|Posted by: Elias Jul 2 2011, 12:22 AM|
| *EDIT* I just played this game today and I know why I didn't like it: 1. Engine Blows, 2. I have to put the brightness up on my TV to the max to see SOME of the cars.
But anyway I want to beat the game because I might as well do it. But can anyone give me tips to not blow my engine I release the accelerator and I brake but then I lose too much speed and lose the race.

Hi guys, i know that this is old thread, ad that post is even older...
But I've got today my copy of the game (already had Logitech DFGT) - and really looking for anything that could help me with translation
Could anybody reupload that FAQ?

| the atwiki.jp page is still active. you can check it there and translate to english via browser.
Also, for story mode, I'm covering the story mode translating the scenes to english given the last known manga translation (most appropriate translation of the cutscenes) ended in the perfect GTR arc.
