Thanks my goal is to get this car to handle/slide and get around the 170mph mark on the stock turbo.

Looks like a really nice project. It's always fun to see projects coming together slowly, gives you a nice sense of accomplishment. 170 shouldn't be that hard in any turbo Supra, I've buried the needle in stock Integras at around 125, and I've gone 165 in a near stock e34 525i. Lightening is the key. How much hp are you shooting for?

Out of curiousity, will the problem be going 170 mph or keeping some degree of control over what the car is doing or might do at 170?

Posted by: BlackMKIII Apr 9 2007, 08:06 PM
Build the head! The 7M is pretty much limited to around 140-150 because the valves overlap around 6.5k. Trust me, I've hit that limit many, many times in my N/A. Of course at that point you can't feel the front wheels anymore. Good luck with the build!

Ill retain the stock head being the valves and the head are slightly diffrent on the turbo 7M's which is why the Turbo A could do 170+ easily which uses the same engine. But I will change the head gasket haha

For what its worth- if you go through the shinanigans of rebuilding the engine, do yoruself a good favor and O-ring that block- Then sigh with relief as the fear of headgasket problems goes out the window smile.gif

Big update plus some carnage.

Well i got into an accident not a big one but an old lady decide her eclipse was small enough to park beside me even though a F150 was less than 2 ft away!

Long story short she realized this and back out in the process hitting my driver side quater panel.

Damage was minimum for me but her door was FUBARD

Beautiful car JDMMA70!

I must say, I particularly love the two-tone paint job. It looks very unique. If you dont mind me asking, what do you plan on using this car for? Keep me and the other WM members posted, I would love to see the cars progress.

Stock they can hit speeds up to 145-150mph minor mods and a long stretch of road and it will get there, now when i said that i did not mean in a matter of seconds may take 20 seconds to get there who knows.

By minor i mean
Intake
Intercooler
Full Exhaust
Boost Controller set to 12psi

Few guys ive seen hit 155-165+ (just ran out of road)

Posted by: DOHC Jun 20 2008, 03:49 PM
for some reason that supra looks way to famliar. Dont tell me the interior tan and its a auto?yeah i blame the weight of car taking so long. Will you be striping it later on?

Posted by: Blue Charisma Jun 20 2008, 07:34 PM
very nice supra..

i believe that stainless steel turns that way just because of heat. my stainless steel headers turnt into that within a day of running.

their a different in minor mods compare na and fi(mainly turbo). na gets the header, turbo gets the boost controller.

Not sure really... looking at the pictures... trying to figure out what could have happened...

Throttle body is off, intake manifold off... spark plug wires are out...

did your air intake system blow or something?

you wouldnt believe me if i told you BUT haha here goes, whilst driving down the road i heard a loud bang then my car started bogging and sounded like a lawn mower, i then proceeded to pull into a parking lot and check the damage, my engine launched my spark plug out taking what ever threads were left with it. So im doing a head swap youre close but no cigar =P

N/A Get 21-24
Turbo Get 19-21 best ive seen on a stock turbo was around 28 HWY.

Go MK3 man youll never look back.

I got Auto because of all the cars i looked at it was the only one that wasnt a complete pile of poo grin2.gif . Everyone who wants a MK3 wants a 5spd and the 89-92 Body Style which is the reason most of those are beat to hell and back. Ill be doing a 5spd swap myself in the future.

Well I like Pre89's better and this car had a clean history and its real clean. Plus I don't trust driving a used Supra more than 300miles without me doing maintence on it. I respect the VG good motor just don't like working on them. Inline 6's are just easier and they are better balanced for power. You know this to be true with Nissans L Series motors, and the famed RB

How does this wet your whistles,

1MM Ferrea Valves, Titanium Springs, Retainers, etc
Brian Crower 264 Cams (Maybe if i have cash 272cams intake and exhaust)
Ported Head (a serious port job using a flow bench)

I got quoted $1250 for this so gotta get the cash first =D

Sounds great, definately get the Ferrera 1mm oversize valves, I got the Ferrera 1mm + valve on my 3sgte with the 3 angle valve job and it worked great! Definately recommended!

Toyota quite possibly made the best seats ever in the world, for MK3 Supra they are like just perfect..

Im looking to stay around stock 8:4:1. Well i was going to go with new Toyota pistons and rods, but they dont sell them individually blink.gif so they insisted i buy a new whole complete short block for the nice price of $2500....yeah SCREW that pinch2.gif , so im just gonna buy Eagle Rods, and Probe pistons i mean Toyota already forged the 7M stock so itll be just like buying aftermarket stuff at autozone. Shes running good my machinist who im never going to again didnt adjust my valve clearance...dumb ass....so now they are ticking so now i have to do it. Other than that shes got electrical problems normal for a 20yr old car.

and i dont know the history of this motor other than that it had a FUBARD rod cap and missing pistons but id say yeah looks like it came loose.

Whoa didnt know you posted haha sorry man. My kit has the glare sheilds on them. my headlamps are Hella E-Codes H4's heres some pics to compare. The next best thing from Hella are Projector Retrofits, that'll come later. (As you can see those since they are European lamps the light is shot off to the right to illuminate sidewalks, etc. These are actually quite good for not being a retrofit. Have you noted any gains in performance? Spool time, torque curve ect. If your car was choking for air with the other set-up, this could be a huge improvement.

Posted by: JDMMA70 Mar 12 2009, 02:57 PM
After the block gets machined itll be assembly time.

Update i figured out what im going to do for fuel.

Ill post up the info i used to get to what i needed so that others can use it.

Courtesy of SupraCenteral (Note i plugged in my own numbers and my setup as well.) Perhaps the mods can sticky this.

QUOTE
First, we start with a Brake Specific Fuel Consumption (B.S.F.C.) rating of .60 lbs/hr for a turbocharged car. This is a measure of an engine's volumetric efficiency. We'd use a lower number (.50) for an N/A car. They just aren't as efficient.

Im looking for 550 at the wheels.

So we take the target HP (550) and multiply by a B.S.F.C of .60 lbs per hour for a boosted car = 330

Take 6 injectors running a max duty cycle of 80% = 4.8

Divide 330 by 4.8 = 68.75 lb/hr injectors

CC/MIN = LBS/HR X 9.71

So 68.75 x 9.71 = 667.5625 cc/min

And that works out just about right. 650 - 680 cc/min injectors is enough fuel to put down 550 at the wheels anyday.

Multiply injector flow rate by 6 = 412.5 lbs/hr fuel total needed to get there. Use the same calc above to get to cc/min (412.5 X 9.71) and you get 4005.375 cc/min of fuel.

To convert cc/min to lt/hour take 4005.375 and multiply by .06 = 240.3225 lt/hr

That's just a hair under what you can get out of a 255 lt/hr pump.

So use two, or what im doing run a single Bosch 040 or a MKIV TT pump intank and run a Bosch 044 inline. So lets see what we get.

Convert lt/hr to cc/min by multiplying by 16.6666667

So one Bosch 040 and a Bosch 044 = 600 lt/hr

600 lt/hr = 10000.00002 cc/min

Divide that by 6 and we'll see it will support 1666.6667 cc/min injectors

Divide by 10.5 to get lbs/hr, so 158.73 lbs/hr

From here it's easy to calculate what these theoretical injectors would support.

Horsepower = Inj Size (lbs/hr) x (duty cycle) / B.S.F.C.

So 158.73 x .80 / .60 = 211.64 BHP per injector

211.64 x 6 injectors = 1270~ horse

So a single walbro is just a hair above from being enough. You might get away with it, might not. I wouldn't push it. And my setup can produce enough fuel for 1270 horsepower.

Just plug in the flow rates for any other pump you are looking and you'll see if it will work.

Posted by: MaikazeFD3S Mar 13 2009, 02:31 AM
I'll take a good look at what I'll need after school/work today, I dont want to be cutting it close with the 550cc injectors, I want room for safety reasons.

Not to be a nitpicking bastard, but why does every Supra guy insist on leaving the timing belt cover off? dry.gif

Its just a couple sprockets... sprockets that can get FODed out. I actually saw an interesting solution in a mag the other day, clear timing belt covers. I don't know how long they would last until they got cloudy and fogged up though...

I have your answer biggrin.gif most of have pulled the head at some paint for one reason or another when we put it back we leave it off to time the car at least on 7m's. Well in order to put it back on and im not joking the thermostart cover has to come off. So its a matter of laziness to put it back on, i hate dripping coolant but oh well. Posted by: Oddmanout84 Mar 13 2009, 01:19 PM
Nah, I like A70s a lot more. Maybe, just maybe, someday... I was toying with the idea of getting a 1JZ or 2JZ for the Z (instead of an RB) and dropping it in, then getting a cheap IS300 as a beater sedan. That way I have interchangeable parts, and a fun "practical" car. That's for the future though. As much as I'd like to get a Supra or something else, my girlfriend has already made it clear that she's going to break out a huge dildo and rape me if I get another project car... well, something like that. At this point I think its the safer option to just stick to one car. Besides, after all the effort I put into this S30, I don't want to get rid of it anytime soon.

drop a 7M into your S30 like AZR's car that thing is CRAZY

I think the reason he is considering a toyota engine is because he wants reliable big power. Not more RB'ish problems.

If I ever got a Supra, God knows, 1J or 2J... III or IV... I'm gonna have to give it infinity billion hp for no particular reason other than it amuses me.

^ That post is full of win.

I have no timing cover either, but its not on for a good reason and its not like its blatently obvious, I have a transversly mounted engine you hardly see it.

I leave it off to make sure my timing belt is tracking right, when my tensioner/idler pulley and the oil pump went bad (Right after one went bad, the other did as soon as I fixed it) the tracking of the belt was a serious issue for me.

To take it on and off (The timing cover) you have to drop the engine, which requires dropping the crossmember, which requires removing the springs/struts, axels and control arms ect. after doing this 4 time in a row, disassembling and installing, I was sick of it. Not to mention it was right up against the firewall, so after you dropped the engine on the floor, it was still hard to manage.

I have it down to a art-form. dry.gif

Not to rob JDMMA70's thread, back on topic.

A clear valve cover would look great, it would protect your timing belt but still show off your cam gears.

I think the reason he is considering a toyota engine is because he wants reliable big power. Not more RB'ish problems.

Heh, well, I mostly put it that way for the sake of amusement. The actual arguement ended more along the lines of "I'm going to leave you if..." because my current project already consumes a great deal of my attention. To be honest, she's right, this S30 takes up most of my time and she's stuck with the leftovers. Its the reason I didn't respond with "Oh, I can't enjoy my hobby? Ok, bye." That, and she's a pretty decent girl. smile.gif

The reason for a yota engine isn't as simple as reliability, although that's a big factor. Its also because its still an I6 engine, has good power potential, awesome aftermarket support, and as stated its shared by a sedan that I would love to make my DD in the future (when the Z gets promoted to "warm weather only" status). Of course, making the Z a summer toy also depends on if I live in a place with that "snow" stuff. Otherwise I'd drive it 24/7/365.

The only thing that's holding me is the little voice in the back of my head screaming "sacrilege!!!" for mixing Nissan and Toyota parts. But the other voices have almost beaten him to death with hammers by now...

I am new here, not trying to be a smartass, but i happen to have experience with the M series engines.

i can help you with the cams, and throttle bodies.

if you can grind cams, then i think that you can advance your exhaust from the stock 230, to 242.

for the intake leave it stock.

will work well with a 8:3:1 compression and will give the top-end needed to reach 170 MPH.

but you will have to reprogram your ECU, Fuel injectors upgrade to 42 lbs.

i did this with my old MX83 Cressida, with 10:6:1 compression, and Individual throttle bodies.

also i swapped the crank to the JDM 6M ( not to look cool, but because there was no heavy counterweights on cylinder 2 and 5 (not sure about 5, maybe 3 it's been a long time happy.gif .)

i also fixed the troublesome gasket problem, i used longer heads studs. fear2.gif

Sounds like you know your stuff i was actually going with 264 cam regrinds since itll work a little better with the 20G turbo im currently running and later on a T-66, as for fuel ill be running a piggy back when i get bigger injectors so i got that covered. The 6M crank doesnt have counter weights on cyl 2 and 5 you are correct there sir. Btw are you the one that built that insane white Cressida that reved to high heaven?

The main problem with the 6M crank is at higher RPMS theres alot of vibrations GT-R's have a problem with this as well. It makes good for revving faster and higher, and its really hard to find a 6M crank that doesnt have a lot of wear and tear. I had a 6M but decided to trade for a 7M crank just to be safe.

the 6M was pretty much in short the prototype for the 7M. It came in the 86 Celica XX in japan it was identical to the 7MGE only it had a 5M head on it and bigger 5M style pistons.

i built three 7M-GEU, one that went into a MX83, and two others I sold them to people who asked me to build them.

but the MX83 was Silver not white, and it revved till 10K RPM safely.

as far as your turbo setup stick with the 20G, it can boost up at lower RPM, from 2000 RPM. the T66 is good for about 600HP, the peak flow is 70-72 pounds/minute.

so if you'll be turning up the boost, better stick with the TD06-20G, less expensive and more reliable.

264 deg seems a bit to high for your setup, you need low end power especially when you are running hi boost, 264 will delay your boost too much, it will be like a T5 volvo, good mid-high power but crappy low end.

as for the piggyback, it's simply not my style, because i try to keep the voltage/amperage consumption low, that way less power will be drawn to drive the alternator under load.

Well to be honest my cam options include stock, 250 and 264 regrinds, of the 7M's ive seen run 264's they make full boost by 2800-3200rpms and pull the power a lot more in the 3000-6500 range. The car is being built for speed, losing a little low end isnt that bad, not as bad as the 7M i rode in with 272's slow out of boost but at 25psi things got crazy, the lag time was a bit to long for me so i figured id meet in the middle somewhere. Yeah i plan to stay with the 20G for quite some time one it was free and two its a good turbo. Goals are listed somewhere in the thread to lazy to go and look. I eventually will upgrade to a GReddy T78 kit and most likely motec when the time comes.

finishing up the three other wheels as we speak. I have no aquired a job and my project is rolling foward again. On my list now is to baffle my stock oil pan maybe also make it bigger with some buldge add ons, and get a crank scraper. I thought about a windage tray to but cant decide both will be good but a windage tray is going to take some time to make. I may just go with a crank scraper (similar concept).

I found this picture of a 7M that was used on the Wangan pretty impressive if you ask me. Not only is it equiped with a windage tray but they also installed a high flowing oil pipe.

So i just got off the phone with my machinist, decided on keeping the stock cams, but we're upgrading the valve springs to BBC springs. Also going to have him insert timecerts into all the spark plug holes (Stripped #1 a while ago). As far as the block update, picked up a new waterpump, waiting on the oil pump. On my to do list, oil change (in 500miles), and of course block machining. Ordered a new wastegate as well to serve me until the rebuild so now i officially start saving for the rest of the rebuild now.

$1200 in the bank the rest i make minus expenses is going to the bank.

Keep checking back for more progress.

IMHO, all cars should have nice paint, wheels and be lowered (even slightly lower than stock would suffice in some cases).

Xmas is tommorow so we'll see what no goodies i have.

Other than that, im doing the suspension soon, i just bought new bump stops, and insulators for the front mounts. I dont want the springs to drop the car as low as ive seen others. Also new wheels to go with the drop. I wont reveal them until they get refinished. Couple hints.

They are 16's (I dont want to waste my new tires)
They are 5spokes
They weigh roughly 16-18lbs

Posted by: MaikazeFD3S Dec 24 2009, 08:51 AM
I think they are Post '89 A70 wheels because that fits his description and he mentioned wanting them to me a week before he bought wheels.

Or they are FD RX7 wheels...

Well its been a while, im hoping to get things rolling again. For those that missed it, I refinished a set of 91 5spokes for my car got them mounted. Pics Above

I just ordered new insulators for the shock mounts, should be here next week or so im told we all know how dealers are. I need to drop the car before TX2K10 so lowering is coming very soon. Right now my only goal besides finishing my build is to keep this car running smooth.

So onto other things, i got some goodies in the mail today.

Well time for another tune up. This time addressing the cooling aspect of my car.

I picked up a generic water pump from the parts store because i didnt want to use my OEM pump on a motor thats not going to be in the car much longer. I was at first scared that the Pump would have a cast impeller wheel. However im satisfied with the construction of this pump.

Prestone and other brand of coolant you buy at most automotive stores like to rust out the water jackets and eat at anything else in the cooling system. I think its just Yamaha engines that they using in Toyota like the 7Ms and my 3Ss.

Green Coolant is usually High in Silicate which causes the aluminum in the head and block to errode. Since most foreign engines are made out of a different combo of metals. They formulate Coolant to fit the engine. Theres a BIG difference in formula in Toyota Red vs Prestone. You want a coolant thats Phosphate Free, Borate Free, and very low in Silicate or Silicate free all together. I have a block that was run on nothing but Green Coolant for about 15,000 miles. There is some serious pitting around the water jackets on both the head and the block. Toyota Red also leaves a protective film that protects and lubricates the cooling system parts for extended life. Zerex G-05 and Zerex for Asian Vehicles also are formulated the same. Various Factory coolants are as well specifically, Asian and European coolants. And everyone knows not to run Deathcool

Posted by: peemyTNBow Apr 4 2010, 10:52 AM
Can't go wrong with Toyota stuff. Most people run a 30 / 70 coolant / distilled water mixture as we don't really see harsh winters. I have always liked the toyota coolant though.

Posted by: VolkChaser Apr 4 2010, 12:17 PM
Crap, I've been topping off my coolant using Prestone on my 5MGE. Maybe I should go bug my nearby Toyota dealership for the red stuff, I did work experience with them and maybe they can hook me up.

Zerex is one of those buy online-only fluids if I'm not mistaken? I haven't heard of it up until this thread, and I've never seen it in Canada.

Sounds good, though the big problem here is that everyone just uses tap water to mix with their coolant, so all the lovely iron in the water gets built up and just destroys the coolant passages of various cars. Not too uncommon to find chunks of minerals in overflow tanks.

Posted by: StraightAwayZ Jun 25 2010, 03:26 PM
That sure is a lot of information to go on. Does it drive on 4 tires? Does it have a steering wheel? Does it use hydraulic brakes? Is the gear box synchro-meshed? Does it use an internal combustion motor? I know answering some of these might give it away, but it sure would help our guessing!

Posted by: JDMMA70 Jun 25 2010, 04:01 PM
Lol smart ass.

It does drive on four tires, it does have a steering wheel (thank god), it does have hydraulic brakes, theres no engine or transmission in it currently, but it is an internal combustion engine.

This old gal has some history...only has 74,000 miles

Two owner car, previous owner could never get it to run right, blown headgasket, rod knock, two failed rebuilds both times the block cracked. He only drove it to track and race events. After that in late 06 he just left the car at the local Toyota dealership. Where it sat for 4 years, two hurricanes rolled through during that time and the paint is practically gone, and it needs some major TLC. Big things coming though.

Everything goes down sometime in June or July.

Ive already spoken with Bmwneotype and hes setting me up with a set of Zeal Function Xs coilovers when im ready to put my downpayment down. Stuff is looking up finally.

Automotive section is pretty dead atm. This is also the longest(time wise) build thread I've ever seen.

Going on 5 years, it's been quite the 'dusty trail' for JDMMA70 to say the least.

We need to revive the Automotive Section, I'm contemplating a thread as-well.

The best builds are the ones that span years into decades. If you look at all the serious builds here they don't get updated that often.

There he is! Yeah its been 5yrs, and I honestly can't believe I'm finally at this point, all the blood, sweat, and tears not to mention money I've sunk into this rebuild. I've got some people suggesting a 1JZ VVTi motor would've been a better choice over these years. However at this point right now, I feel as if this 7M the way they should've come factory. BIG update is coming Saturday. Hows tthe R32 doing J?

Busy being expensive. What else is new. I had to replace all 4 tires from a blowout. For the price of 1 tire, I can replace all 4 on the Z.. I'm just glad I don't have a track porsche.. for 1 street tire on the GT-R... I'd get one on there. laugh.gif

When you scale things up it really puts things into perspective. But I'll get to where I want to be eventually. I have my whole life to build this car.

Speaking the truth!

Oh and I'm just going to stir the pot; something is going down on the Supra today. I'm sure JDM will fill us in later.

First start up didnt go so smooth the injectors were leaking but after that was sorted it fired right up. This is the impressive part for anyone who knows 7Ms. Hot Idle oil pressure was 10-15psi and at 2800rpms 75psi. so its pretty nuts.

Start up vid i took before i left sounds nice.
