whats up WM haven't been on in about 4 years, im surprised my password still works! I finally got my Desktop from my dads house with the Wangan midnight volume 1 movie 3 divx copy that i'll load up once i get a damn cable and monitor for it, as for now this is my build thread. I found out about wangan Midnight way back in 2000 when I was 15 years old, Ive always been a z nut ever since i was a little kid but the moment I saw The Devil Z i knew that Was the Car I had to have. From the flares to the fender mirrors and wats, I fell in love so hard that after wrecking my first 280 I bought a Midnight blue 72 240z from my buddies brother, it had a blown motor and i picked it up for 400 bucks.
2DSm's, 2 240z's, 3 Honda's and 1 sweet e30 bmw later I'm now back in my 5th and final Z car!

A 1973 240z

user posted image

Don't have any more recent pics but she's, been lowered and the sparco seat i had was removed for a better imoao (in my old ass opinion) stock 280z seat, the (sparco was too small). I also installed some 6k Hid and a Sparco steering wheel that all my 240sx freinds keep bugging me about.

I picked her up last year after finding her on craigslist and traded my 3rd honda a 1991 acura integra ls.
She came with an already swapped l28 sourced form a later model 280z with all the efi stuff removed in favor of some earlier model 72 240z su's, a 280zx electronic dizzy, nissan comp race header and msd ignition, along with some oem nissan fender mirrors a pain in the ass wiring job that my roomate and I took a good 3 days to sort out, other than that she's been running great and has been a fun to blast, I also surprise a couple of people when they take off from a light and pass them up or are rigt there with them lol ( Don't worry i don't street race) just wanted to see if she had anything left in her and she did lol.

Ive been wanting to build my version of the Devil Z for some time now and I figured since i was financialy stable and had the car it was time to git"r done!!

I picked up a 280zx turbo long block from my friend who installed a beefier 280zx turbo motor into his car, the setup was complete minus, an efi harness, and ecu which was fine with me since I knew going efi was not happening anyways.
Efi is much more reliable, can make more power and it's safer but mikuni's and turbo sound so damn good!!
I have most of whats needed to do the install and have been doing so much hw on the subject that when Finally ready for the install I'll have my head above the water and be good to go. I'll keep you posted, some more pics are below and thanks for reading this because if you did, that must have been boring and you probably though 1. this guy needs to learn some writing structure and 2. get to the point!!

the REAL life devil Z was a L31 twin turbo EFI not carb.

Carb is going backwards, it'll work but not as effectively as EFI, EFI have so much more control over engine combustion.

http://kyushakai.wordpress.com/2009/12/17/mid-night-club/

good luck it would hit 186mph+ i believe.

actually the Car built By speed shop Shinohara for the first film wangan film circa 1991 was a 3.1 blow through equiped car that made 600hp with that setup, reliable no, efficent no, fast yes, it was later converted to efi for more power/stability using an sk efi plenum, the original setup was much like this one http://i45.tinypic.com/2v2a7m9.jpg
http://www.kamikazeracing.org/jcr-zx/jcr-cartech.jpg
only it used the hks plenum the difference between the two is the cartech plenum in the pic is simply a box that encases the carbs to allow a sealed system to flow through. The Hks and Sk plenums had chambers built inside the unit to help keep fuel pressure levels up and keep the carbs pressurized better as the mikuni's don't like change. Its a win/ lose battle but it works lol.

Jim cook racing and cartech made those kits. jim cooks personal race car made 450+ hp utilizing the same kit as in the above pics only it was a 3.1 as well that was majorly modified and this was in the 80's
I have a standard zx turbo motor, once i get the motor working how it should, I'm gonna yank it out and send it to Rebello Racing for a 3.1 stroker build and then slap it in with a bigger turbo, thankfully turbo tech has come a long way the past 20 years.

i think it was around 5,000 they sell the individual compnents to do it yourself also. I use to go there alot when i lived in california, he actually did a 4g63 for my talon, that was about 4500. even his 2.7 builds make upwards of 230hp/tq
I remember one car they dynoed was a 3.0 build and made 260 on stock su carbs, the triple webers/mikuni/solex's would def make more, but the guy wanted the su's lol.

I've had to describe the basic parts/price rundown for the Devil Z motor a few more times than I can count over the years. Normally I would laugh at anyone even thinking of doing the 3.1 TT triple carb setup, and pretty much tell them sarcastically, good luck with that. This is usually because, well, for obvious reasons, it's extremely difficult to assemble all the parts to even get started, and then well... most people couldn't sync a standard set of SU's on a stock motor if their life depended on it. Much less Mikuni's on a blowthrough setup.

BUT, you've got the hardest part acquired already, looks like you actually know what you're talking about, and have done all the research. SO for the first time ever, I honestly wish you luck with your project and I'm very eager to see your progress!

Quiet you. First off, Speed Shop Shinohara did achieve approximately 600hp, and it was triple mikuni carbs.
In the 80's in Japan, Turbo L28's were pretty much their version of what a Superchaged 350 is here. Everyones got one, everyone knows how to work on it, and there are a few that are super serious.
Blowthrough turbo mikuni setups were not that uncommon over there in those days. I used to have links to a bunch of vintage Japanese drag racing and trust me, there were quite a few HKS Surge tanks on some rediculous old Z's to make the video's extra pretty.

Here is the mod list of the Speed Shop Shinohara Devil Z build;
Engine-
P90A head, F54 block, both sourced from an '83 Turbo 280ZX
Triple Mikuni side-draft carburetors, 47mm bore
Twin Garrett T3/T04 hybrid turbochargers
HKS SuperSequential Blow Off Valve
Custom fabricated intake plenum, 47mm velocity stacks
Custom grind camshaft, 290* duration [?], .510 lift [?]
Forged internals, ceramic coated forged dished pistons [7.4:1 CR]
Claimed 620BHP@6000, TQ unknown

Trans-
Nissan/Borg Warner T5 5-speed, non-"World Class"
Twin-plate Ogura clutch

Diff-
R200 VLSD sourced from '87 300ZX Turbo Special Edition

Suspension/Body-
SSS [Speed Shop Shinohara] coilovers, custom valving
Custom sway bars [SSS?]
SSS custom 8-point cage
Takata 5-point harnesses
Bride racing buckets

Brakes-
R32 4-piston front calipers, cross-drilled/slotted 11.5" rotors [Front]
cross-drilled/slotted 11.5" rotors, calipers unknown [Rear]

[Sarcasm]
By your logic, I am the only guy in the US who can validate this, simply because I'm probably one of maybe 10 people who has an actual Speed Shop Shinohara sticker on a Z.
[/Sarcasm]
And yes, I actually do have a pair of SSS stickers.

Also, dont pull random numbers out of your ass for top speed. An S30's REAL top speed is not based on it's power or gearing. It's entirely based on it's aerodynamics. Of all the 240Z's I've seen with the same front air dam and rear spoiler, all of them get very squirrely in the back end around 150-160MPH, where as an identically powered 280Z with just a front air dam and no rear spoiler is typically still controllable and mostly planted at 160mph.

Yes, I am on HBZ, and they were on the rear quarter windows of my old "DemonZ" which was red. I transfered them to a Zzzap special edition shell I was working on 2 years ago. I had to sell that shell a few months later, so I've been without them for over a year and a half. But, the car, and the stickers have found their way back to me.

I havent seen anyone selling those stickers in 5 or so years. And even then, I only saw two sets for sale and they were gone within 24 hours.

And thanks for the comment on the signature, I need to update it with my two latest Z's

lol. I've had a lot of people request that I try to reproduce them and sell them. I've been thinking about it quite a bit lately, If I do, I'll be sure to save one of the first sets for you.

And again man, really eager to see the progress on your car.

some more pics, took off the oldschool hks blow off valve.
I'm gonna clean it up, but I'm not gonna use it, emailed HKS but i doubt they have any info on it. More than likely I'm just gonna get a new HKS bof fit it on to the surge tank like the original. I also picked up my roomates Greddy Evo 2, that was cut from the axle back, I think it came off an evo or something, it was "too big for his car", it's gonna take a bit of modding but i think it will sit nicley under the z, and sound great once i get the 3in pipe to go along with it. Ive always ran greddy exhaust's and love the quality and sound.
still waiting on the carbs I'll post them up once they come it, after that it's a few more bits and the build will comence grin2.gif

I have that same HKS valve in one of my boxes of vintage parts. I did some research on it way back and I heard it referred to as a re-circulation valve quite a few times, rather than a BOV. It's technically a Bov, it's designed like one, works like one, can be used like one, and sounds kinda like a beer or soda can opening, more of a deep "chhhk" sound. It's not at all adjustable unless you replace the spring or shim it with some quarters.

I've seen a few on some older Subarus and on an old school RX7 12A turbo kit.

On the subaru, it was recirculating back into the part of the intake system, however it was very dark and I couldn't see exactly where it went, or for that matter how it made any sense.
From it's location and where it looked like it was routed, it appeared that it was routing the escaping gasses out of the intake and then possibly into the carbon canister.
And before anyone asks, yes, I mean it was mounted to the intake, and then the escape or trumpet, if you will, was plumbed back into something else. As in not just venting into the atmosphere, I'm talking a sealed system.
The owner of the car kept assuring me that it was routed from the intake.... back into a more forward section of the intake, and tried to show me.... but he did a very poor job and it was never 100% clear. I still find that hard to believe.
*Edit #2* after discussing it with my turbo specialist roommate, it is recurculated back to the intake after the mass air flow, but pre-turbo *End Edit #2*

I've seen one used on a turbo S30, however it was a little soft at 12psi. I got to drive that particular car for a weekend, and I must say, I do like the unique sound of that valve.

If you find out anything more I'm all ears.

*Edit* Found some pictures of when i had mine apart a few years ago while I was trying to research it's origins:

As TDZ said, usually I'd try to talk you out of a triple PHH turbo setup, but since you actually seem to know what you're doing rather than "Oh I want it since I just saw WM..."

Good luck man, I've about had it with my mikunis TBH. The only reason I haven't just swapped the L series out entirely for something newer is I don't have another DD to use while I do it.

Ok, back from the dead, last couple of months have been hectic, but i have loads of new pics and super happy funtime stuff!! I put the project on hold for a bit as i was contemplating selling the caeb stuff and going efi, luckily iive been in contact with some very knowledgeable people and was fortunate enough to find a cartech turbo kit instruction manual. This has given me a good starting point to work with and has sense helped me decide to keep moving forward.

It doesn't rain much in vegas, but when it does, it sure as heck makes up for it. Due to bad road irriigation and my impatience my front lip broke due to loads of water bearing down on it. It was either stay in traffic and almost drown or try and make it home no matter what. I

2 weeks later i ordered a new valance. It was a bit of a mixed blessing as the previous valance was not installed correctly and would jitter, come lose and bounce around after long periods of driving. The new valance is rock solid and fit's perfectly, measure 3 times then measure 1 more time before you make your initial cut.

Alternator conversion / battery upgrade
user posted image
Now as many of you may/may not know, early z cars came with dinky 40 alternators and external.voltage regulator. Equping the car with an aftermarket radio, fuel pump,Hid headlights, electric radiator fan,msd 6al,the oem alt couldn't keep up with all that craziness.
The best option was to run an updated alt thats internally regulated
And that would let me add more accecories later on while still able to handle the load. Luckily nissan left us with some options, i went with a 1990 nissan maxima 90 amp alt, it's not quite direct bolt on as you have to swap pulleys and change a bit of wiring, but its easier then fabing mounts and new brackets. I originally went with an 84 300zx non turbo 70 amp, but I wanted to try the 90. All seems well and its worked fine for the the past 4 months. Wiring is straight forward but a diode must be installed in order for the car to turn off, the external regulator took care of that on the old system. This works well on 70 to late 72 models 73 and up require aditional steps due to models coming factory equiped with electric fuel pumps. If you need help or have any questions about the alt conversions give me a pm and ill give you all the details.

user posted image
Location of diode in place of voltage regulator. The two plastic pices have been removed and the diode relocated into the main harness for a much nicer oem look.

user posted image
After the alt conversion it seemed fitting to do a battery upgrade, the battery of choice was a drycell shuriken at 13lbs and a 850 ca rating combined with the fact that it was free, why the heck not?

Here is the little guy all nice and snug in its new home for now, in the near future it will be located to the rear and a surge tank will be sitting in it's place. I just wanted to make sure everyrhing worked and so far so good.

well I sold my mikuni's and decided to give up this whole blow through setup mess and go efi... just kidding I found some 45mm sk carbs user posted image
they are good for 15psi out of the box and as old as that set looks with my age calculations It should be able to run at least 10psi lol.
I sold my Mikuni's due to one of the housings being cracked. among other things discovered when attempting to rebuild them mad.gif
Good thing is they are staying with in the family and My roomate is going to use the other 2 for his Blow through 22r build as we found an HKS surge tank for his celica. it's for an 18RG but It should work. (crosses fingers)
As luck and hours of research would have it. I decided to pick up a megajolt ecu and convert the z to an edis system so I have complete control over my ignition setup while under boost and not on boost. No locked Dizzy and 4mpg wot for me. with the mega jolt, Mileage and drivability should be way better especially when not under boost. time will tell. I plan to put the carbs on and set up the edis system in NA form to get a better understanding of it so that when It's all Dialed in the turbo can go on and we can go from there. wish me luck!
