A bit late, but I'm definitely calling bull on this.
First of all, if there was legit news on the GT-R not coming to North America, all the automotive magazines, blogs, and websites would be ALL over it and fans would be in a F**King uproar. Not just that, but some dealers in Vegas have already showcased GT-R demo's at the local speedways.
And in terms of tuning... have you ever heard of hacking? I already know Amuse, Cobb, and other tuning shops/companies have hacked the computer and ECU of the GT-R. Amuse already has a tuned 600 HP (to the crank) GT-R WITH their own choice of rims. If you don't believe me then just Youtube Amuse GT-R. And considering the transmission unable to handle more power, the tuning shops will probably customize their shit to beef it up (as will Nissan do also).

BRING BACK FROM THE DEAD:::::
So, we've already found that it's not impossible to tune. However, it's not cheap to tune either. Of course, that stands to reason with the price of the car. However, none of the next gen Nissans have been easy on the tuner market. The VQ35 wasn't impossible to tune but it wasn't cost effective until about 2 years ago. Most of the CAI and Exhaust systems did little if anything to help. Harmed a lot actually. To do FI, you had to pay 7k for the for the turbo and piping and about 3k for the engine build (and unless you could do it yourself 3-5 for install) and you were only gaining 100-150hp over stock. Spend 20k on an SRT4 and 5k in upgrades (suspension and stage3) and you're eating a 350Z's food. They've since gotten better (obviously), but Nissan does a pretty good job from the factory with their vehicles, hence the difficulty in tune. The VQ37 is the same way. None of the tunes thus far have been anything practical. Sure, Mine's and Greddy have tuned the new GT-R but their tunes are aggressive and need constant monitering. Nothing really streetable as of yet imo.
As for the wheels, changing them is more of an inconvience than anything else. The TPMS light stays on. But it'll drive. That's not a problem exclusive to the almight GT-R. Heck, Jeep Patriots have that same issue. There's a rather simple fix for it. However, at GT-R price, why not be able to monitor your tire pressure. Might as well get all the luxury, right?
I think the best point that was made was that about the GT-R price. It starts at 70k and will definately have market inflation BUTSEKS markup so expect these to touch the 85-95k mark with ease...putting out of range for most people let alone people on this forum. And just like the cars it chases, most of them will remain stock.

There's a reason that the GTR hasnt come over to the US already, and that would be due to the actions of a certain Domestic car company who's name I wont mention.
When news of the R35 hit the ears of the US manufacturers, a second Domestic car company jumped on the band wagon to have the car blocked.
Nissan took quiet, but firm legal action to counter the attempted block. Nissan of course won. Needless to say, the R35 IS coming to the US, as you can see by the pictures of the Florida lot.
If you watched Nissan and Nismo over the last year, you may have noticed a subtle decrease in overall spending. Money was being allocated to fund the legal battle.
I wish I could give you a valid url source to back up my claim, but the information was acquired though a contact who has information coming directly from Nissan.
^This conversation came up when he and I were discussing the recent seizure of R32's and R34's. He actually seemed to know what was going on before the information was out. Kinda blew my mind.
*Edit* Withdrew this statement to prevent hearsay about a certain person *End Edit*
As I said before, I have no hard proof. All I have is information from a person who has up to now been 100% accurate in the information he's given me.
Take it for what it's worth, it may be 100% true, or it could be completely made up, but I've never had any reason to doubt my source, so in my eyes the info is legit.

If you want some reasons, I could give you some. First question to ask is why would a domestic manufacturer care if some Japanese company decided to build a twin-turbo AWD 6-cylinder? There's nothing the GT-Rs of the '90s could do that several other foreign sporty cars couldn't do, sometimes at a lower price, and Japan shipped over several of the other 280hp "Gran Turismo all-stars" without a problem, including Nissan's own 300ZX twin turbo. If you think the GT-R was considered a threat and barred because of it, I think you're overestimating the impact of the car.
The second thing to consider is the fact that barely anyone but Japan got the car. If I recall correctly only the R34 was sold in limited numbers to the UK, and most of the Skylines in Kiwi- or Aussieland were imported privately. Unless you'd like to expand your friend's conspiracy theory to include European manufacturers, it doesn't seem to have an explanation.
As best as I can tell, Nissan saw no reason to convert the Skyline to left-hand-drive and ship it around the world, and it wouldn't have made any business sense to only sell the sporty, impractical GT-R here, but not the modest sedan it's based on. The fact that the Japanese are a bit xenophobic and consider the GT-R the pride of their country may be a factor, too.
