My T-5 blew up, the bulk ring between the snycros and 4rd gear snapped in half, bulk ring between 3rd gear and snycros stripped clean also the gear selector for 3rd/4th gear completely shattered. 5th gear has chips on it on both the driven and drive gear, reverse is no longer there/ missing teeth.

over all it seems only usable parts are 1st gear, and the counter shaft.

output shaft moves literally 1-2 inches even has in and out play input does too. this transmission seemed a little noisey from the start though. along with the wrong fluid combo the first time and it was a ticking time bomb, had a feeling this was gonna happen just didnt know WHEN it would happen. I'll post pics in a bit.

current thoughts: what a pile of horse shit. I have no idea WHY or HOW this happened.

when i drained it it was all silver/brass coloration.

The T5 is a POS that you shouldn't have wasted your time with, in addition to using the wrong lubricant?

used mercon/dextron -3 was suppose to use dextron only this did away with my 4th and 3rd gear syncros.

Standard ATF is DexronIII/mercron mix. The Dexron/merc mix is the current evolution of dextron I and dexron II. (when I say current, I mean what you'd buy now for an 80's - late 90's vehicle) If you were supposed to use Dex I or II, then you'd be using the DexIII/merc now.
Ford's Manual transmissions are aluminum cases and cannot handle standard gear oil. DexIII/Mercron mix, standard ATF, is the correct fluid for that transmission

You had the right tranny fluid unless you used something like Mercron V or Dexron 6.

*edit* odd bit of trivia... Dexron I contained sperm whale oil as a friction modifier. *end edit*

I knew this was going to happen one day, and yet you blamed using the wrong oil. Owner negligence, much?

I was making it very clear that he wasnt using the wrong tranny fluid, and that it wasnt the fluid's fault.

Also, it's funny to say "Sperm Whale Oil" and it's true.

Though it's still negligence, I presume?

The best gear oil in the world for a specific application won't save you from what sounded from the beginning like a preexisting defect or design flaw in your transmission. That transmission wasn't really the best designed piece anyway. Nissan's transmissions usually aren't. Look at the Skyline ones of the same era. They're pretty jank too.

True. And either way the Z transmissions are basically reverse engineered and tweaked ford transmissions to begin with.

as some of you may or may not know my diff exploded. what i thought was a bad CV axle was actually a spider gear bouncing in my differential.

i did a 0-60 and FINAL the loose spider gear found it's way into the pinion gear and diff case and caused my Z to lock up the rear tires and spin out. luckly she's fine. I have a suspension this diff has been like this for 5+ months.

my progress thus far. I also finally had time to mount my supra injectors.

My not-so-humble opinion:

A VG30 will do 550whp, but you'll never be able to drive it on the streets, unless the car gods REALLY like you. The Z31 is a great platform, but she's a heavy girl. If I might be so bold to suggest.... shave off as much of the weight as you can. Get rid of all the useless factory junk (ie: stereo, a/c, sound deadening, etc...), go with a barebones interior (thin sheet aluminum to replace interior panels?), and bring her up to a more modest 350-400 whp.
You still won't be 100% streetable, and may need wider tires... but at least you won't be forced to make the choice between doing involuntary burnouts or stalling.......... in reverse.

yea I was thinking of that the other day 450 or 400hp would be nice.

well Diff's in and it feels amazing, does anyone know about fluids? like the thicker the fluid the more heat dissipation?

I'm using 90-140 just for the break in period then I'll switch to 70W90 synthetic.

While weight loss is always a good thing, tho i think ditching the radio and going to "aluminum panels" is a bit extreme and not at all worth it lol

propbably I'll go with a fiberglass hood, and maybe fiberglass hatch or something. but i dont want to get RIDICULES amounts of ticket fines every time a cop pulls me over.

you have no door panels the car isnt street legal etc etc.

the car fully loaded weighs 3,000 pounds i cut that by a bit.
removed A/C and p/s, and remvoed EGR and other BS, still need to remove the heater core.

Door panels are over-rated.
You've dropped down to 3k? She can still be lighter. Too bad you're so far away... I could do some good work on your car. Weight-reductions are my specialty. :)

I wonder if it was the miss matched axles that did it in.

I wonder if it was the miss matched axles that did it in.

i had to modify the axles in order to get the VLSD to work.

mismatched or not if it works and doesn't break or cause any adverse effect go with it right? my car was half white/half blue and they didn't make a difference.

the J30 axle is longer and fits in the Vlsd cartage giving it the LSD effect with out it, it's a useless open diff.

the other is the original Z axle, it fits perfect and needed very little modification.

mismatched or not it didnt matter. and this was after i blew my diff noticed the patched area around the diff cover. it was that bad that it shot out that piece.
