I picked up a 77 280 2+2 last year from a junk yard. $350, didnt run, and it was rather rough.
The idea was, "what can I build out of spare parts in my garage?"

user posted image user posted image user posted image user posted image user posted image user posted image user posted image user posted image user posted image user posted image user posted image user posted image user posted image

I Havent really done much up until the last 3-6 months, and even then, with both my jobs I have only had one or two days a month to work on it.

Engine was a complete mess... giant paperweight. Electrical system has some good gremlins. Fuel system is completely trashed, rail, pump, and tank are all garbage.
Paint was reeeeeally bad, a few dents here and there as well.

Built a motor from parts in the garage: N42 Block (bottom half of my old "Black Bastard Motor") N42 Head, and a shaved Non-egr N42 intake. No money spent.
Dropped in my old ZX 5speed
dug out my BRE springs for the front(still need to find what I did with one of the rear ones...)
Oldschool wheels
Corbeau seat
^All in the garage.

Working out the fuel system issues atm.

I'm Still in the middle of bodywork and paint. I'm using spray on Truck Bed Liner so I'm painting each area after I'm done with the body work on a section.

Still a work in progress, no real exciting plans for this one atm.

Here's an update.

Threw the build into high gear after taking almost a month break.

I started on Sunday and have been busting my ass to get the car drivable this week. Unfortunately, I wont be able to finish by Saturday like I had hoped, but I will be very close.

This car is what some might consider slightly Rat-Rod like, or Rat-Rice in this case. I also went back to carbs, rather than messing with EFI, in part because this car has some serious electronic problems (thanks previous owner) and also because it sorta keeps with the theme.

Gas tank is completely fragged, so I had to sorta make one.....

And yes, it does say "Import Racing Fuel" on the can. LOL.

I havent been able to really run it for more than a few seconds here and there. With the carbs and open 3-2 headers, it sounds like a WWII plane and is WAY too loud.

I'll be putting the vintage exhaust on it soon and do some test drives after it gets some idle time and carb tweaking.

I suppose we'll see what happens in the next few days.

lol, ty We've got a stack of probably 20-30 of those tanks in the garage. I'm considering taking like 3-4 of them and welding them together to make a badass full sized tank, but in the mean time, I'm just playing with that one to get her going.

Exhaust is on, clutch master and slave replaced. I need to fix the Brake master cylinder (brakes dont work at all, master cylinder is plugged up)
Drove it for the first time, with no brakes, which was interesting, but a hell of a rush.

Old school exhaust pics:

Running a 3-2-1 MSA header into a dual straight pipe system, at the very end there's a pair of 15 inch 1 and 3/4 inch pair of glasspacks with chrop tips welded to the ends of them. It's got a hell of an exhaust note.

Finishing up making it road worthy, so I can use it as a temporary daily. Then I can sell my 300ZX convertible so that I can pay off all my tickets and suspended license.

What ever I have left over after payin those bills will go to buying another 280z or 240z.

After that.... we'll see.

I've decided on a name for the car, and that is "ZOMBIE" since technically it is the living dead.

Got into the rear drums and came to find that the rear left was entirely destroyed, lines, wheel cylinder, shoes.... everything.......
So I cut them off.

I dug around in the garage for a bit and came across one of my old rear disc conversion setups. So I spent a little quality time beating the living daylights out of what was left of the backing plates for the drums and then put the discs on:

Finally got the brakes bled and installed a stock tank I picked up for a hundred bucks. Since it was now running and stopping, I ran it down the street real quick (no plates or tags, so it was just a quick "round the block" kinda thing.

Video:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VCyq9-dVCN4

Not bad for a car I put together with almost entirely spare parts I had lying around.

Well, here's an update:

She's been running for a while, not perfect thanks to using a stretched timing chain and some "Rebuilt" carbs that I had been manhandled.

Here's a vid of me running it down the street real quick;
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VCyq9-dVCN4

Fun to drive once it decides it feels just right.
Cant drive it legally, thanks to my current lack of title, and a few warrants tat have prevented me from going through the motions of getting a bonded title.

Stock grill and turn signals are going to come off, and I'm going to put in a small block off plate in their place eventually.
I also have a special plan for paint on the doors that I haven't followed through with yet.

Been looking at motor options for later, had a lot of people push me toward the idea of a twin turbo LS1, or have a BMW 528i donor I could pick up for $500 and do an M52 swap.
Or I can just take some money and time to build a proper L28 instead of the cobbled together "Spare parts" motor I have in it right now.

I love the build, literally bring the car back from the dead and working with what you have. I think the car should stay L28 and then clean it up and try to fix some of the electrical issues/de-ghettofy it and have one badass primered Z with a story behind it.

Whats with the Z31? That is a serious f**king car, yours?

HUGE UPDATE

I am now DRIVING the Zombie!

That's right.

Went and got insurance, then a temporary plate on friday, which was also my 25th birthday.

Did some short road tests mid afternoon on friday, and have been driving it ever since.

Went to TacoBell in it last night with my roommate at 1am. We went through the drive thru, and our total came out to $6.66 Because of this, the lady taking my order refused to tell me the total or take my money, so one of the managers wound up having to do both, and apologized for the inconvenience. My roommate and I thought it was hilarious. I told him "It's alright, I've got a license plate sitting in the back that has 666 on it too." I had the classic 72 license plate "DWB 666" from my old Demon Z in the hatch. My roommate couldn't stop laughing.

Back to the mechanical stuff;
The timing is off, probably due to the timing chain probably having 200k miles, I have a small oil leak, and I'm running about as rich as Bill Gates. Still plenty of fine tuning to do, but I'm loving the hell out of being back in an S30 again.

Sorry for the blurry picture

Bringing this thread back from the dead (get it? get it!?) to see if there've been any updates. I know that Z31 looks like a monster, and I'mma let you finish, but it's always nice to see someone dailying an S30. Just wanted to know if you worked the kinks out of her yet.

Props on a ghetto build. I'm lovin' it.

Lol, wish I was dailying it, however, she's been sitting since November. She runs, not great because the carbs are kinda funky.

Main reason for not driving it is because I still havent gotten the bonded title. Been un-employed since November (going back to school again) so I dont have any extra money coming in. Also moving to the other end of town this month, so everything is mostly on hold.

In the mean time, I got another motor that I'm working on building to eventually be a low boost turbo motor, and I'm trying to isolate the problems in the fuel injection system(currently replacing all the injector connectors and what not.)

Hopefully I'll be back in the swing of things in the next month or two.

So, spring break is upon us.

*Sorry in advance for the huge pics, Imageshack doesn't let me resize iphone pictures the way I want*

I moved to a new house (along with my previous roommates) about two weeks ago.
Finally have enough shelves to put most of my assorted Z crap on.
So now I have a garage I can work in again.
with spring break now kicking off, I've decided I'm going to jump start the Zombie project by beginning on the turbo motor.

At 3 this afternoon, I began (and nearly completed) a full tear down of two of my spare motors... I stopped around 6 when I realized I couldn't find my Drill, or my ring and bearing sets.
user posted image

I'm going to have to go through all my boxes in the morning to see if I can locate the bearings and rings...

I also did a little work on the front end of the car to play with possible ideas for the finished product. (Crappy wire mesh grill will probably be replaced with something a little less shitty in the near future)
In the mean time, here is the current Evolution of the Zombie:
