Have any of you guys gotten the yellow light of death? If so, what fix, if any, would you recommend?

I've had mine for a little over 4 years. I think its an 80 gig.

never gotten it, google brought back a few results worth looking at. i think you can send it to sony to get repaired if you're not confident with fixing it yourself.

I've read some about that, and I've read some things...

-It's expensive, might as well get a new one.
-It takes a long time, in some cases it may take Sony 6 weeks just to get back in touch with you.
-You may end up with a refurbished one instead of your own.
-You may lose the game inside.
-You lose everything on your HD.

I'm going to take it to a shop to let somebody look at it, then if he can't fix it then I'm just getting a new one.

Took it to a shop today, guy looked at it for 30 minutes trying different things. Still wouldn't work, so I had him take the HDD and MW3 (the game that was stuck in there) out, and trash everything else. Then went to Gamestop and got a new PS3.

Now, is the HDD useless, or can I get stuff off of there somehow?

YLoD = PS3 overheating. Thermal paste is gone/ of bad quality, and/or the soldering is now broken. Non-lead solders are used on the phat PS3, and they are less reliable than lead solders. Using lead solders as a solution is kinda risky for the PS3 though, so I had to buy a slimline PS3.

I was having the same thought. Mine also suffered YLoD, launch day 40GB unit. Dunno if the slimline uses the same type of HDD in the phat one, cause if it is, I'm transferring the data from the old to the new one.

I don't think it was overheating. Because yesterday, I didn't turn my PS3 on once until last night, and it was only on for 5 minutes before it shut off. Wasn't even the least bit warm.

From what I'm reading, there's no way you can transfer the data.

Sony can be such a total asshat sometimes... I'm just hoping that the slimline won't present the same problems with the phat models.

I'm thankful I got a backup of my GT5 save a month ago, and it worked. Everything else is gone, but I'm not upset. I lost TDU2, IDES, Wangan, GTA4 and EFLC, and COD games, from W@W to MW3.

Not upset because I can get those back with time. Same with sports games, except no time.

How did you back up your saves? Via flash drive, or by Playstation Network Plus?
