I Think I will actually reply to this thread. because it is relevant to my interests. Umm, Before starting any dance you have to start with foundation. What is dance? Dance is movement to music. Correct but then dance is the expression of ones self to the music. Ergo, if the music has a higher tempo & more of an upgroove, your dance should reflect that and your expression should be one of a "happier" or jesty sort of style. HistoryNow onto what I do know, which is hip hop. Hip hop is not a "dance style" it is actually a culture which date back to 60s -70s. Hip Hop consists of 4 Original Elements. MC'ing(Master of Ceremony), Dj'ing, Graffiti & Breaking. Hip Hop music actually started from the dance. One Dj during a block party, noticed how the dancers would mainly start dancing during the Breaks of the song ( Without lyrics) and so these dancers were called "Break Dancers". That is why BBoy can be considered as the Original Dance of hip Hop. Now a few years later, came the introduction of Soul Train, which was like MTV of the 60s-70s. This is how Locking slowly became part of hip hop as well even though Locking is considered to be a party dance. Same thing goes with Popping. Also the OGs of Popping are still alive today. Popping Pete is still alive to my knowledge. StylesToday there are so many different styles of what we can consider as "Hip Hop" - Commerical Hip Hop
- L.A Style
- Wacking
- Popping
- Locking
- Bboying <--- Me
- Hustle
- and a few others I can't remember
Just like any other dance, all these styles listed above have foundations, and these foundations require months and years of practice and perfection. As a bboy, 6 step is a foundation, but then I still do drills for 6 step, because it is a foundation move. and I know mine is not perfect yet. Popping is one of the more technical styles considering that a "Pop" is the contraction and expansion of a singular muscle. That is popping at the VERY BASIC, I am not even considering the difference in Popping styles, G-style, funk etc. I have to get back to work but I'm going to depart with one last saying that an OG bboy said to me. "Just because you attend dance classes every week does not make you a bboy/popper/LA/Locker whatever. You have to practice it everyday, until you feel it. Only then can you be considered a dancer."
