I'm starting a pinned topics section based on factual information and trivia related to real things that have inspired some of the Wangan Midnight mythology. I was convinced to do this by reading IDW's Facebook and Main Page trivia on ins announcement section and wanted to do one here to spur discussion. I also came across a little gem from Jalopnik that reminded me just how fascinating some things regarding the real life locations can be.

Here's the article regarding some of the most wasteful transportation projects of modern time. http://jalopnik.com/the-ten-most-wasteful-...odern-472052244

I quote verbatim from the poster who suggested Aqua Line:

QUOTE (TokyoBayAquaLine)
Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line

It cost 11.2 Billion USD at the time of opening, and it was made solely to make the hour and half long trek through downtown Tokyo quicker by over an hour. It was a massive industrial undertaking, and was started decades before completion. Its cost was a brilliant show of needless excess, as by the time of opening people simply couldn't afford to take it, making it pretty much useless.

Original toll was something ridiculous, like $25USD one way, making it only viable for truckers, buses, and hashiriya (street racers) who would race down it's insanely long underwater tunnel. Although since going down in price to something more reasonable, it's still rarely used by the general public.

It's estimated it will take over 200 years at it's current rate of traffic flow to be repaid back by the general populace, and by that time it will have ballooned in cost due to maintenance, etc. It was basically a show of engineering force from Japan, that unfortunately contributed heavily to Japan's rising debt.

A total waste, but a joy to drive if anyone gets the opportunity.

It's quite interesting to note that something like the expressway that has spawned so many stories was actually an exercise in excess.

Give me feedback and I'll put more up in the future.

The Aqualine / Umihotaru: The only 2 things it's great for:

1. 20+ km drag races
2. The beautiful scenery you see once you get to the Aqualine Parking area

Other than that, it's still a wonderful piece of road-built architecture.

@J
Interesting piece of architecture and history over there... come to think of it, it's interesting how things would look like when you're at the parking area

@Gunma
Got any pics of the Aqualine's parking area?

That's a one piece of beauty in Wangan. Anyway, this spot was used in The Fast and The Furious game in PS2 and PSP.

@Gunma: Yup, pure power on Aqualine is sure great, with scenery, and at night.

Access to the Aqua Line is shared with the Kawasaki route, that connects Yokohane and Wangan in Haneda. There are junctions located next to the southbound Kanagawa toll booths on both Yokohane and Wangan.

The only game that replicated this is Tokyo Drift by Namco Bandai (actually modeled by Eutechnyx of ACR fame), they included the PA area drivable, which I think was the best part of the Aqua Line.

In real life I don't know if the place has good scenery. You're in the middle of the bay waters. Maybe some ocean to reflect upon would be a hobby there I guess.

Yes. Maybe I should add some picture from the game...just to show that it's real that Tokyo Drift add it?
