On paper the cars are supposed to come in on the month of their construction + 25 years so August. However some ports seem to be letting them in based on year. According to Sean Morris, EPA is pretty clear on what is exempt, NHTSA is still a bit vague so a word of warning there that until the day of the month of construction+25 some rules stickler at port can still hold you up but so far so good.

Has there been any clarification on the year/year-to-month laws yet? I haven't talked/seen Sean post anything so I wasn't aware if any discrepancies have been worked out yet.

25 Years Old. What does it really mean by the legal definition. Since Trevor brought his R32 GT-R in on Jan 1, 2014, the internet and many others have been up in arms about what is actually 25 years old. The EPA definition for the 3520-1 is very clear. Its the manufacturer year minus the current year- and that gives you the age of the vehicle. EPA anything over 21 years old in original configuration is legal to import.

NHTSA/DOT/FMVSS was a little less clear. We went to US Customs last year for some guidance, but again after this car came across the border we went back to the local US Customs office to get the real interpretation.

After a discussion with the US Customs agent, he said that a vehicle must be 25 years old as of the Month/Year of Manufacture. Normally this is a positive thing as vehicles are produced before the year, and often have a year later model. Normally anything in the US manufactured after September of a year, are the next year model.

Japan is not like this. In Japan if its made in December 1988, its a 1988. If its Made in January 1989 then its a 1989.

With that said, the 1989 R32 GT-R's start turning 25 years old in August. If you schedule a shipment from Japan now, you will see the car in February. So time goes fast and 25 year old R32's will be here before we know it. Now we are down to waiting months vs years.

Here are the production numbers with chassis numbers of the vehicles from a Japanese production chart. You can also find out the production month and year from the Nissan FAST parts system, or the De-Registration certificate.

August 1989 BNR32-000054
September 1989 BNR32-001089
October 1989 BNR32-002089
November 1989 BNR32-003027
December 1989 BNR32-004027

January 1990 BNR32-005083
Nismo BNR32-100007
February 1990 BNR32-005554
Nismo BNR32-100536
March 1990 BNR32-006484

Really late reply, but that is some excellent info. If I do it again, which I'm sure I will, I would like a more legal car this time around so I can rest with no worries.

Thanks for the post J!

Awesome news man! (I'm new here but not to Wangan Midnight)

Just to obtain one of the classic GTR's is a feat in itself. Bummer that its snowing in the photo and that probably means salt, but that is quite an achievement to own of Nissan's best cars ever made.

Maybe there will be more of them on US roads soon.
