QUOTE (HateSkylines @ 1 hour, 37 minutes ago) | As long as the entire front engine cover (Upper and lower portions) aren't removed I do believe your fine. If the how often do you think I rock will work its way all the way through the engine bay to get into the cut-out portion of your front engine cover? I think the choice is yours.
I left mine off my old MR2 for 8000 mile and I didn't see any issues.
Flame-suit on, bring it. |
Its not a matter of how often or what the percentage of chance is, its that its an easily preventable potentially catastrophic incident. Why leave something like that WAITING to happen to swallow a pebble/bolt/wrench/whatever piece of FOD happens to get swallowed by it? It doesn't have to be while the engine is running, either. Then its just a pain to fish it out (if you even noticed it go in).
Gambling at the blackjack table is fine and shows you're a man who's willing to take a chance (or knows how to play the game well enough). Gambling at Russian roulette shows people you're insane and have a death wish.
The choice IS his, between a plastic part or the possibility of losing a whole engine. That's like someone taking a chance reusing an OEM rod or head bolt. It might hold, it might not. Personally, I like to keep whatever bases I can covered.

QUOTE (HateSkylines @ 5 hours, 25 minutes ago) | You are correct, but like we both said the choice is up to the owner.
To get my cam cover off the MR2, I have to remove the crossmember (which means axels, coilsovers, hubs and swaybars have to be disconnected) and unbolt two motor mounts to get all 5 bolts out holding to cover on just to mess with my adjustable cam gears? I think not. I decided to take the risk of losing the timing belt in a non-interferance engine and leave it off anyways to get ease of access to my cam gears for timing adj.
Besides, remember how my brand new Toyota Oil Pump blew up because it wasnt the revised Post-5/91 3SGTE one I ordered? It took out both the upper and lower cover and I never bother replacing the upper portion.
I don't need to be schooled on why its there, I do what I do for good reasons/intentions. |
I know, and you've did a nice job fixing that MR2 the way it was. But take it from my perspective; in the military I learned the right way and the not right way to put things together. I'm kind of a hardass about it. Take it with a grain of salt, but its my method of thinking.

QUOTE (Blue-Sensei @ 1 hour, 17 minutes ago) | I've got a random question...My car rebuild..the current suspension feels completely fine and I don't feel anything wrong with it, but I also have no clue how old it is. At the same time I was thinking about getting some new wheels, reducing mass on the tires. Should I switch out the suspension (for oems...of course. >_>) or get new wheels....
P.S. and about the cam gear cover, atm I don't feel like it's that high priority of an issue, but after I fix (above problem) I'll look into getting one... |
I wouldn't switch out the entire OEM suspension if it feels alright. If anything else, replace all the bushing with polyurethane. It can be a pain in the ass, but its cheap and makes a noticeable difference.
As for struts and springs, do some tests like pushing down the body front and rear and see if it rebounds back in a swift fluid motion. If it bounces around after it returns up you might want to look into investing in some struts. Might as well get new lowering springs which your at it unless you want to go with full blown adjustable coilovers.
