QUOTE (Jon Michael @ Yesterday at 8:04 PM) | See, I watched the fansubs before it was on Cartoon Network...I hate Cartoon Network. They are to anime, what MTV is to music...and that is crap. |
I will agree with you that CN has gotten strait up stupid with the new shows they have on their ADULT SWIM line up. But they USED to have a pretty sweet lineup. I remember when they used to have Ghost in The Shell, Cowboy Bebop(LONG ass time ago), Samurai Champloo, Paranoia Agent, ect. I have no idea why they would ditch that setup for shows like Tom Goes to the Mayor, but I think their making a comeback,kinda... They still have G.I.T.S. late saturday nights, and I think I saw a commercial for Blood so lets cross our fingers!

Last time I watched CN or Adult Swim on a regular basis was back in the day when they had their FIRST run of Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star, and 08th MS Team on. I stopped watching after that because it just got ridiculous and stupid. CN uses the fact that "they are the majority of kids' only source for anime" to manipulate what kids think is cool and to create fads by feeding kids this mediocre and sometimes downright awful anime. Simply put, because it's on CN it's the only thing a lot of kids see so they automatically think it's cool and eat it up...
I stopped watching when every dumb kid in highschool wore a Trigun shirt or had some Trigun merchandise from Hot Topic. Then, one kid came up to me and asked if I knew Trigun, I said yes. He replied with how cool it was and everything (Trigun is a decent, average anime but nothing too special), he then asked if I watched other stuff on Adult Swim. I responded with, "No, I don't watch CN. I watched Trigun like 4 years ago in 1998 when it was first released in America, and I had to wait for each new DVD to come out. I don't count on tv to tell me what anime to watch." The kid's expression was priceless.
Gah...CN is the devil...

I literally saw about 12 Trigun shirts this week!!! And thats sounds hillarious, wish i could have been there! I also got the same reaction when Akira was shown as a saturady night movie on CN a few weeks back. This group of freshman who know I watch anime,(dont ask me how), asked" did you that movie Akira on saturday! It was so badass, I gotta get that when it comes out on dvd!" I replied " You can borrow it from me, I"ve had it since I was 5..." then walked away.
p.s.- Not the devil, devils advocate....

Sigh... I'm just of the opinion that dubbing an anime just takes the soul out of it in general. I mean, take Shin Seiki Evangelion for instance; the original Japanese voice casting was pretty good. But MAN, DID THEY SCREW UP with the English dub for it. I just can't watch the dubbed version at all, they screwed up Shinji's voice SOOO bad. *sigh*
Naruto is almost the same. In Japanese, it's pretty good; in English, it's only mediocre. Personally, I'm still of the opinion that "manga > anime" for the most part, but that's just my opinion and I respect others who think otherwise.
On a side note, I went to my local bookstore, and lo and behold, I find the most ABHORRENTLY MISTRANSLATED manga ever: Initial D... I'm not saying I hate on Initial D, but I hate on how TokyoPop went and made it into a fanboy comic book. Seriously, TokyoPop is to manga as CN is to anime. Sigh, I just wish that they'd stop butchering good manga and let someone who wants to translate CORRECTLY do the work.

QUOTE (touge_ninja @ Yesterday at 4:49 PM) | yea on it your gonna see ryoma's DRIVE V!! wtf its supposed to be DRIVE B! |
Actually, that particular mistranslation, where they make Japanese "B" into English "V" is semi-common, as the Japanese "B" sound is more of a cross between "B" and "V" in English. Again, case in point, the title for "Evangelion", in Japanese, is literally Romanized as "Ebangerion", said "Eh - baa n - ge - ri (a cross between the hard "r" and the "l" of English) - on". But translated, it's Evangelion. So, the Drive B to Drive V change may have been intentional.

I have to admit, for someone like me who feels the same about english dubbing with particular shows, I think Evangelion was actually done quite well. Compared to many shows that are dubbed nowadays to Evangelion way back in the late 90's when I watched it in VHS format, it blows these new shows out of the water.
I think in terms of dub, you lose the general feel for it. Mostly cause you hearing it in Japanese, you dont really know what there saying unless you look down and read the subtitles. An example is when I watch Macross Plus, I really enjoy it in english, because the dub is done in such a professional manner that you feel the emotion in there speaking. I just dont think you can get the same feeling listing to a language you dont understand. Regardless of reading subtitles.

Honestly, I only watch subs because SO many dubs suck majorly. But, I could care less if something is subbed or dubbed if it's quality. I know we can't expect every anime to have the production values of some of the big movies, but at the same time it'd be nice if they didn't seemingly grab the crappiest people to do voices either. I'm getting tired of the same handful of people dubbing everything, and no one seems to realise they suck REALLY bad. Half the girls who dub I just want to smack in the mouth and pick them up and throw them. And, where is it written that young boys have to have the most annoying voices in the universe??? Really, finding a real boy to play the voices (like in Howl's Moving Castle & Kingdom Hearts I&II) is SO much better than some annoying girl that tries WAY too hard. And, having 1 good voice actor who plays EVERY male lead is really annoying as well. It's like something getting overplayed on the radio, yes he's good...but, my reaction is starting to get like "Oh, him again..."
Bah, Americans have a long way to go before we're on par with Japan's values and quality in anime.

That's the same reason I don't care if it's not dubbed. Because, honestly the voice acting is much better quality in the original Japanese audio. And, the voices ACTUALLY seem like different characters. Like the voice actor made a voice for THAT character and really made them unique and individual. SO, many American dubs have actors who do these "one size fits all" voices. Even one of the best voice actors (imo) Johnny Yong Bosch has the exact same voice for almost all of his characters. I'm getting kinda tired of it, we need some new talent.
I don't know much Japanese, but at times I can understand what is being said to a degree. I of course still need subtitles to get it all. But, at this point I don't even notice the subs, if that makes sense to anyone. I have an incredibly fast reading rate, and when I get into watching something I don't even notice the words anymore...it's like I actually hear them saying the words in English.
So, until all American dubs are on par with Miyazaki movies or other high-production animated works...I'm gonna stick to subs. Because, I don't really care about Naruto a ton...but, after seeing the dub for that I wanted to just punch someone in the face.
