Starcraft was the best RTS ever made in terms of popularity, worldwide success and balance/competitiveness. It didn't really take off until Brood War (the expansion), but by now it's probably the most recognised RTS ever. The professionals in Korea keep the game alive and still fresh even this late into the game - new tactics are being used and countered even today, with each new tournament season heralding the arrival of new maps that must be adapted to for most effective play. There is no one 'superior' build that beats out everything (like C&C3). Every move your opponent makes must be countered by you - money is not the most valuable resources in SC, information is. It's an incredibly deep RTS, and it even manages to be balanced. The maps aren't always balanced as well as the game, but that is what can make for some very interesting games to watch. Anyway.. that's why I'm worried about SC2. Obviously, for Blizzard, the pressure is HUGE. Living up to the legacy of SC:BW is not an easy task, because the target audiences they have to appeal to are so radically different. The hardcore fans of SC:BW want a game that is extremely similiar to BW if not identical, so that a good thing is not ruined. This is a valid point, because BW does what it does extremely well, and why would you want to deviate from the best course of action? Unfortunately, the other audience is the so-called 'casuals' (derogatory term? You decide!) who want the exact opposite - a new, fresh experience that will blow your mind in terms of how ground-breaking the game is. This is obviously a valid view to hold, because watching and playing the same game for ~10 years isn't everyone's cup of tea. People want something new. The inherent problem in marketing towards the casuals is that it's very likely they won't become part of the dedicated userbase - they will drift away and find a new game after they're bored of it, or if a new game comes out. However, considering the fact that battle.net (Blizzard's online match-making service) is free to play on, that might not even matter to them. Everybody's money is the same if they pay the price for the boxed game. That said, I'm not sure if money is the (primary) goal of Blizzard in making SC2, because WoW is doing just fine in terms of generating revenue. Dustin Browder (the lead designer of SC2) has said that they have, for all intents and purposes, an unlimited budget to work with on SC2. Anyway, when it's all said and done, I just want to see it done successfully. Kudos if anyone manages to struggle through the wall of text
