Toned down =/= cheap It is a mere SHADE of red. like how there is sky blue dark blue, etc etc etc, due to different intencities, pink is a merely less intense, more sophisticated version of red. Furthermore, since purple takes on part of red in itself, its a true busturd colour, which actually cannot be "accurately" reproduced.
