Pinned this thread since it's pinned on the IDW board and it seems to be active enough.. Well.. it's official. My brake pads are worth more than my car. Semi metallic carbon/ceramic Endless MX72 pad. Coefficient of friction .37~.42 with an operating temperature range of up to 700 deg. Celsius... Most road cars will never see greater than 250 deg. Celsius. That said, these pads have been functioning better than the stock ones even pre bedded and I had a few panic braking situations already where they've had surprising bite for a semi metallic. " But J" you say; " You're dumb. You'll never realize the full potential of these brakes! You won't ever put this car on a circuit and there must have been better, more practical pads for street/highway use. Why use the highest performance street/circuit pad for a daily?" To which I'll give that all too familiar canned answer of the mad scientist- ' Because I can.' Looks nice huh.... NOW WHY DOESN'T THE REST OF THE CAR LOOK LIKE THAT!!?? <sigh> I know. It's just going to take time and money to keep restoring. And a lot of welding and steel. Funny thing is the rotors when we measured them were at full thickness which indicates to us that one of the previous owners of this project probably did pads and rotors RIGHT BEFORE allowing the car to sit and rot. Which is a real shame. The rotors looked like this before we milled them- As we did, we got a wonderful miasma of red smoke- I swear it was like drilling Mars rock. The great thing is with oxidation that bad, we had to mill each rotor 3 times to nearly the minimum thickness. On this particular rotor, the rust and pitting was so bad you can see where the brakes sat on the car for nearly a decade. This post has been edited by The J on Mar 19 2013, 09:01 AM

The car's kinda weird just because I had to do some things backwards in order for it to be federal and state legal here in the United States and to stay out of trouble while driving it on the street. Normally all the surface rust and body damage would be the last thing you do on a restoration project but as you can see: Pretty car outside Sickly car inside It runs well- don't get me wrong. I pretty much had to rebuild the engine and fuel and ignition system but you're supposed to reinforce the chassis and repair structural damage before you touch bodywork. The issue is that I absolutely needed a second daily and can't justify having a 4th car which would make 2 economy cars and 2 weekend battleships. So instead I spent a little money to make the car look presentable so that the cops where I live who are bored as hell and will pull you over if your car looks shabby or looks like a beater, don't have any reason to pull me over. Pretty much ran out of time and money and didn't want to be late to work because of cops. It'll be straight soon enough though. And so we don't stray too far off topic- R32 stock projector headlights from the swap meet. The guy I bought them from was surprised I knew what they were and more surprised to sell them. made off like a bandit with these. Also my cat seems to be very interested in them for some reason. Are you sure it's okay to drive such a rusty car around? D: //slightly worrying. |
Although It's sweet of you to worry, the car did pass a Highway Patrol and DMV inspection which does include roadworthiness prior to it being issued California plates. I made sure fixes to major structural problems were sussed prior to its submission; Problems for example that could cause a car's chassis to just break if say its suspension bottomed out. On a personal note, I also needed to make sure that by the time I was using it regularly, it was a car that would not tear itself apart from structural compromise in regular road use since it's the car I use to drive my wife and my sister in law in and I care about their survival far more than my own. I really don't like the idea that something I drive might hurt someone other than me who's either another motorist or a passenger due to my negligence. That said, while the rusted out frame rails looks like it might cause serious structural collapse some day, (it will I'm sure in the future but) I have a new refurbished subframe and suspension waiting to go in within the next 2 months. When that happens the remaining structural deficiencies like those rails will be addressed in phases of welded on steel and paneling which will hopefully take place within the course of a year.
PS. Just noticed what time it is in NSW (I assume that's where you are). What are you doing up so early? Or is it late and you just didn't sleep?

I also just realized that I asked my guy in Endless Japan on Tues of that week for the pads; didn't want to EMS them; so he put them in his luggage; he arrived from Japan at LAX on Thurs which is the day I picked them up; and I installed them Friday. So my Z has 'overnight parts from Japan.' Just needs NAWS and quick jettison diamond plates.
