QUOTE (The J @ Today at 8:39 PM) | It's a Kaiso Kit car. Which is pretty much as legal as a non Motorex car as they get. You can even register it in CA using SB100 like a Shelby Cobra. Can't remember what he has in terms of power tune. Just remember he has a lot of HKS stuff. HKS intercooler, Oil Cooler, Z33 MAFs.. But yeah. If you know someone who has that type of $$$ to spend on an R33 or a shop that wants it for that price. Tell me and I'll call the owner. |
His R33 Is not a kaizo kit car. I believe it is just a state titled car.
To the people who are saying 40,000 is too much for a GTR. Each country is it's own market. Go try to tell the government of countries that charge 110 percent, 200 percent import taxes that put GTRs and Rx7s in the triple digit numbers.

New guy here and I have a quick question. I been meaning to buy an older GT-R but everywhere I look it says that they aren't legal and it wouldn't be a good idea. If that's the case, how is it that so many people are driving them at this meet? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Most driven Skyline GT-Rs are one of 5 kind of cars.
1) Kaizo Prepped Kit car (This is a full 50 state legal option, but it is not cheap). You buy a rolling shell from Kaizo Industries (they do not sell you a complete car). If they sold a complete car, they would have to make them conform to DOT/EPA Crash test laws, and National/State smog standards. However, the DOT does not have any say in rolling shells, as long as they meet DOT's spec on what they consider a rolling chassis of "car parts". It is up to you to source the engine, gearbox, and a few parts, and put it together like a box of legos. But, hey, in the end it is 50 state legal. You can even apply for smog exemption in california with a Kaizo title.
2) State-legal cars (Cars that were shipped in pieces to avoid getting nailed by customs' agents that X-Ray containers, and check them). They are then titled in a lenient state and just driven. If no one knows, then no one cares right?
3) They are Motorex 50/49 state EPA/DOT Approved cars, or better yet they are one of few CARB Legal GT-Rs.
4) This is very rare, but not impossible to find. You may see some guy who drove his canadian R32 GT-R and kept his Canadian plates. Just drive around on those plates, and if you get pulled over, just say you are from canada. This is a very difficult option, and somewhat risky. Not impossible to pull off though.
5) Military members who ship their cars over through the military and get state license plates.
When there is a will, there is a way. Money makes life much, much, easier. Most people dig their graves because they will try to try to get a GT-R Here in the USA the cheapest way to try to "match the car's cost in japan".
The US, European, UK, and Japanese Markets are totally different. UK, Australia and Japan were some of the very few lucky countries to have Nissan import the Skyline GT-R in at least certain numbers, so they are 100 percent legal cars in those countries.
Depending on year, modifications, V-Spec/V-Spec II, The kind of title/legality will decide a Skyline GT-R's price in the USA. Prepare to pay a HIGH PREMIUM for Motorex, or even more for a California approved CARB Skyline GT-R.
R32 GT-R : $20,000 - $40,000 USD.
R33 GT-R : $30,000 - $65,000 USD.
R34 GT-R : $55,000 - $95,000 USD.
If you want an even older Skyline GT Turbo like an R31 Turbo, Kaizo does not sell those "shells". You are stuck going the state legal route.
If you want a 1968-1973/+ Skyline GT-R, GT-X. You can import them legally due to the 25 year import/smog exemption laws. Hakosuka GT-Xs go in the 20,000-23,000 USD Range.
Real Hakosuka 2000GT-Rs with matching numbers, original S20 Engine, etc are worth in the 60,000-100,000 USD range (The Price in japan, in yen).
Good luck with your search.

QUOTE (J^2 @ Today at 11:58 AM) | I like how everyone's waiting for me to slaughter him for the pic. Here's news for you: I'm not going to. He even asked me first if he could post it online, to which I answered 'yes.' I'm not worried because I trust him and it's expected since he's got the GTR now. |
HIGH 5! i wish i had a girlfriend that was understanding.

bmwneotype: yea i know about those ways, cuz a while back before motorex got shut down, my brother was serious about importing a R34. but ive seen a few canadian r32s driving around seattle before. but here in the U.S. we have R32-R34 while theyre stuck with the 15 year rule haha. but they still get more JDM imports. ive seen a hakosuka GTR here before, i was like damn...rare but still easier to import compared to the other R's cuz of the 25yr thing, so i wasnt that shocked to see one. BTW, you live in cali...i heard that a seattle based car group called "garage SPL" "moved" to cali after some problems(ive heard financial and custom problems) for their cars. they had a few R33s, 1 or 2 R32, 1 bayside blue R34 v-spec, a JDM evo 7, USDM nsx and more..jw if you cali guys ever heard of/seen them?

As far as I know the company went bankrupt and closed. You'd know more than me if they went elsewhere. I've not heard of them since.
