In my experience, most of what gets dumped straight off the camera isn't going to be a stand-out shot unless you've got a few thousand dollars in glass, filters, etc involved in just that singular shot alone over multiple exposures that are being stitched together. I spend probably 30 seconds to a minute composing each shot, and then 10-15 minutes in Photoshop Camera RAW per shot to dial everything to where I intend it to be. Goes to show that if you know how to manipulate what comes off the camera, it matters much less what the initial quality is.
