I just can't think of another engine that is that cheap to modify, it's not that simple.
Don't even count Mitsubishi's 4G63T or Hyundai's version of the 4B11T, those engines have aftermarket parts, sure, but they don't come as economical as SR20 parts. |
Well as with anything, its not going to stay around forever. Interest will wane over time, unmolested or "pure" motors will get harder to find, parts will get rarer or more expensive, and then people will move on.
Look at my current motor, the L28. Its getting harder and harder now just to get a set of good BEARINGS or RINGS. Let alone when was the last time someone made a full stroker kit (like Tomei does for the SR20) or piston sleeves. Granted a lot of new technology has come about since the 1960's and its not entirely profitable to make a line of parts for a 40 year old motor. But the SR20's days are numbered as well, as with any motor. Its just a matter of when.

well, what you said is true, I'm not going to argue with it..
The tuning scene is steadily losing good engines. Just look at the 4G63T. Its already been replaced by the 4B11T, which is a good engine but I just don't think that aluminum block can handle anything more than 600bhp.
If the SR20 does really pack it things and leave, I hope the FT-86 engine will be there to replace it. My hopes are high for that car.

The tuning scene is losing good engines, yes, but they also aren't (in most cases) even bothering to look for a replacement. Eventually, you'll have the make/country of origin purists who have to pay out the a$$ for their parts, and then you'll have people like HBZers who are willing to drop almost any engine in that's cheap and available.
I, personally, don't see the point of paying the amount people want for SR20s and RB2Xs when I can get a Mercedes M102, M104, or similar for a fraction of the price, AND have more displacement at the same time.

Hence another reason why I got the KA over the $2000 SR20DET my cousin was selling. It was free, lol. Slightly newer so it has more parts availability than the L series, and some parts suppliers are starting to make nice things for it.
KA26DET ftw.

Formula Drift has been taken over by V8s (My friend just swapped his 1JZ out of his R32 with a LQ4 just to stay competitive) because they are cheaper for more power/torque compared to a SR/RB/JZ ect. Lets face it...Formula D drivers are generally budget drifters with lots of skill, minus a few who have lots of money and skill. So these V8 motors with bolt-ons are making close to 400whp, of course people are going to like that.
Some will always say they prefer their JZ/SR/RB/4A better, but its about being competitive on a budget.
The SR20s day are numbered, everyone on Zilvia thinks they're gay now and blah blah blah. I think its a great motor, I have no problem paying the price for parts on any engine, whether it be a SR, 3S or JZ ect. I like the motors for their powerband (And sometimes, lack-there-of powerband) and heritage.
I guess I dont mind the time and money it takes to build a engine like a RB28 (Which can easily set you back $20,000+ if you go all out) over something else that will make the same power for alot less.
