[ Post merged on Mar 22 2010, 07:26 PM ] QUOTE (Yoshida Seiji @ 1 hour, 48 minutes ago) | Rotas on anything is automatic fail. No questions asked. |
I'd expect that from you, since you drift cars which is probably the most punishing thing anyone can do to an automobile. And I can't blame you for that, since I would much rather a set of forged wheels for something like that as well. Down the road when my car is ready to track and I have more money in my pocket, I'll probably get a set for that purpose. But if you're just driving a regular street car and not touge-ing into curbs, (which is murder on ANY type of wheel), Rotas would be fine if you don't mind the stigma. http://forums.hybridz.org/index.php?/topic..._rota%20failureThe TLDR version for lazy people: Rotas have made OEM wheels for multiple big name car companies for years, You're not "screwing" 'real' wheel manufacturers because the patents have run out anyway, 'real' wheels are high priced because of demand and "JDM culture" allowing distribs to jack up prices to wherever they want, More Z owners run Rota RBs and RBRs on street and serious track cars than you think and there hasn't been a reported failure yet. There's more to it than that, but that's why its the tldr version. I run Rota RBs on my 280Z. Am I going to put their stickers all over my car? NO. Would I rather run a set of Watanabes or SSRs? HELL YES. But I'm poor. I'd rather spend money on my car making the engine push a little more, my brakes stop a bit quicker, and make the whole thing more reliable in the big picture. I also know that no amount of daily driving or even spirited driving is going to make my wheels magically fail in the mean time. If they do, I'll post pictures of the wreckage so you can see. However I'd be pretty surprised if a big pothole or curb smack wasn't involved. I've been monitoring my wheels every time I take them off, no stress cracks, and the casting is still thick enough in the higher stress areas. Amazing. The guy who sold me my engine is also a wheel whore when it comes to high quality forged and Wats. Even he was impressed with them, and he's ordering a set for his Z. Hopefully the fact that we're both helicopter mechanics also counts for something...

As much as I want to agree that Rotas are always trash, Oddman has a point. I've said it before. Rotas don't do much harm in the way of non performance wheels with street tires. Just don't EVER track them. I'm surprised Forza 3 has Rotas in their lineup.
They ARE derived from the designs of other manufacturers, even if that design is no longer protected by intellectual property laws, they're still copies. That said, a wise man said- knock offs will exist forever because peoples budgets will be put to better use. Assuming you follow the program and don't use it for a performance app at least. Extreme example- Some people build replica Porche speedsters. Some may never be as good as the original but not all of us can just go and get one. I'm sure many of those Speedsters are just cruiser and show replicars.
Rota's quality honestly has significantly improved in the last few years. Easy when you have a baseline of a history of no quality control. If you're using them for NON PERFORMANCE DRIVING ONLY, I echo what someone else has said elsewhere "they are an inexpensive alternative, even though I still say you should pinch those pennies just a tad longer and get the real thing." The problem comes when people just don't listen to instructions like- these wheels are for show and go only. Or when people label them as the brand they knocked off like Spoon wheels instead of Rota Slipstreams. That's stealing the money that should be going into Spoon if you're going to portray them as such.

QUOTE (SouthSideSlider @ 1 hour, 40 minutes ago) | i beleive they couldn't get NIsmo to let them get wheels in the game cause of the strong tires between nissan and Polydigital
i kinda wish they would come out with a upgrade pack for FM3 with new wheels and body kits.(please add rota slipstreams for my spoon replicars(yea yea yea. they are rotas but visually noone will be the wiser. MUWHAHAHHAHAHA |
If it's in game I don't care. There's no real money going towards that. Unless you count the money paid to license the wheels but then again- it's not like there's such a thing as durability and craftsmanship to worry about in the game world.
