People have their own styles of playing. Some pros (or most in fact) jam the steering to block their opponents coming from their sides, and there are pros who can do without it. There are pros who jam and can really block well, and noobs who jam to 'try' to block, but fail miserably, humiliating themselves. I don't usually jam the steering in battle (unless I'm doing it for fun against friends), and I think I'm considered above average.
